The Halifax Resolves Chapter of the North Carolina Sons of the American Revolution recently conducted its annual Americanism Poster Contest.
The topic this year was for the student to pick a Revolutionary War patriot from the local area, or a patriot ancestor if they had one, and draw a poster describing the individual.
This contest was open to grades 3-5, dependent on the year American History is presented.
In total, 49 posters from five local schools were submitted, the highest number of entries to date. The participating schools were Belmont Elementary, Manning Elementary, Cornerstone Christian, Halifax Academy and Northeast Academy.
This year’s winner was Manning Elementary fourth grade student Elliott Sass, son of Wendy and Chris Sass of Roanoke Rapids.
The topic of Elliott’s poster was Halifax Patriot Willie “Wylie” Jones.
Elliott received a Chapter Level Winner’s certificate and a check for $100.
His teacher, Jessica Small, received a Certificate of Appreciation and a check for $50.
Halifax Resolves Chapter President Ken Wilson made the presentations.
The poster now advances to the state level of the contest to be conducted May 20 at the close of the Patriot’s Day Ceremony at Alamance Battleground.
