NCSHP reports two traffic deaths

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported two traffic deaths today — one a hit and run of a pedestrian and the other a single-vehicle crash on Sledge Road.

Pedestrian death

Trooper Levern Bynum responded to a pedestrian death shortly before 1:30 this morning on Highway 48 near the Green Store outside Roanoke Rapids.
Kareem Mayo, 44, of Roanoke Rapids, was struck by a vehicle while he was apparently in the travel lane. The vehicle did not stop.
Currently there is no vehicle description and the Highway Patrol encourages anyone with information to call its office at 252-536-2224 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.

Sledge Road

Trooper D.P. Efird said speed is a contributing factor in a single-vehicle crash which occurred shortly before 4:45 p.m. on Sledge Road, about 10 miles outside of Littleton.
Melvin Lee Arrington, 62, was driving a 1982 Chevrolet pickup when he went off the road to the right and then came back on the roadway. He then crossed the centerline and went back off the roadway to the right when he struck the ditch and ran went into the woodline. The truck came to rest against a tree and became engulfed in flames.
Arrington, of Littleton, was in the vehicle when the fire started, Efird said. Further investigation will determine the cause of death.
Efird said the crash occurred as Arrington was exiting a curve. He estimated the speed to be 75 miles per hour.
