The Roanoke Rapids High School Varsity Yellow Jackets Baseball team won their opening round game in the Ray-Avery Easter Tournament at Ayden-Grifton High School on Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets defeated Bear Grass Charter by a score of 7-1.
Colby Warren was the winning pitcher for the Jackets pitching the complete game giving up one unearned run on four hits while striking out five batters.
Bear Grass Charter opened the game with one unearned run in the top of the first inning, but it would be the only run they would score on the day.
The Yellow Jackets responded in a big way with four runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Cameron Rogerson scored on an RBI single from Marcus Allen. Allen then scored on an RBI double from Aaron Jackson. Peyton Jackson, running for the pitcher Colby Warren, scored on a wild pitch. Finally, Aaron Jackson scored on an RBI single from Josh Elias.
The Yellow Jackets scored the final three runs of the game in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Josh Elias and Jordan Collins scored on a two RBI triple from Tommy Bradley. Bradley then scored on an RBI single from Bracy Irby.
Coach Mark Snead stated, "This was a good win for us. After a week off we came out swinging the bats well. Bear Grass Charter is a good team and we played very well to beat them. We had 8 different batters collect hits tonight and that is what we need moving forward in the season and toward the playoffs. Colby pitched another strong game. There are a few things we need to work on to keep getting better, but I like the way we are playing right now."
RRHS improves to 13-3 on the season. The Yellow Jackets will play again on Monday for the second day of the tournament. The Yellow Jackets will face Farmville Central at 3:30pm (a move forward from the original 4:30pm time due to weather concerns) at Ayden-Grifton High School.
