The Roanoke Rapids High School Varsity Yellow Jackets Baseball team captured the Ray Avery Easter Tournament Championship by defeating Pamlico County by a score of 13-11 in 8 innings Tuesday night.
Trailing 11-7 heading into the top of the 7th inning, the Yellow Jackets responded with 4 runs to tie the game. Josh Elias led off the inning with a single. Tommy Bradley also singled to put two runners on base. Elias then scored on a single from Bracy Irby. Cameron Rogerson came to the plate and stroked a double to score both Bradley and Irby. Hunter Connell then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring home Rogerson to tie the game at 11.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, relief pitcher Cameron Rogerson set Pamlico County down 1-2-3 to send the game to extra innings.
In the top of the 8th inning, the Yellow Jackets scored two runs to take a 13-11 lead. Colby Warren led off the inning with a double. Warren then scored on a ground out from Josh Elias. Jordan Collins was then hit by a pitch. Carson Neal was then called upon to pitch run for Collins. Neal stole second base then came home to score on a double by Tommy Bradley.
In the bottom of the 8th inning, Cameron Rogerson shut the door with another 1-2-3 inning to earn the win.
Coach Mark Snead stated," Pamlico County came to play and had us on the ropes. But the guys came alive in the dugout in the 7th inning and it helped us come alive at the plate and pull out a hard fought win. Cameron Rogerson did a great job coming in to pitch in relief and pick up the win. I am so happy for our team. They really wanted to win this tournament. They played some good baseball and were able to pull it off. Once again, I am really proud of our team."
For his performance over the three day tournament Cameron Rogerson was named tournament MVP.
With the win the Yellow Jackets improve to 15-3 on the season. Their next game will be Tuesday April 25th at Franklinton. The JV game will start at 4pm with the Varsity game to follow.
