Eleven adult softball teams stepped to the plate this past Saturday in Jackson to honor the late coach Mike Newsome.
The third annual Team Mike adult slow-pitch softball tournament swung-off Saturday morning at the Northampton County Wellness recreation complex in Jackson. The overnight rains didn't ruin the fields for the action, nor did the dirty clouds that moved around the complex about 1 PM, but the bad storm with a down pour of rain flooded the fields about 5:30 PM. The tournament had to be called and the men's and women's team that had not suffered a lost were named 2017 Champions. The Trophy Hunters won the men division while the Southern Ballers won the women's division.
Tournament organizer Randy Wrenn stated," I want to THANK EVERYONE who came out and played or supported this great event. Special thanks to the Roanoke Rapids Twisters travel softball team and all who helped this event a success.
Team Mike is set to award three local High school sport seniors a small scholarship to help in their college experience.
