Williams scores 37 to lead R-MC women's hoops past SU 68-62

ASHLAND, Va. - Sophomore Kelly Williams (Garysburg, N.C./Halifax Academy) recorded her 16th double-double of the season with 19 rebounds and 37 points, one point away from the program record, as the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team defeated Shenandoah 68-62 in ODAC action on Tuesday evening in Crenshaw Gym.

The first-place Yellow Jackets improved to 14-3 overall and 7-2 in ODAC play. The Hornets dropped to 7-11 overall and 3-6 in conference play.

Williams went 14 for 28 from the field and 9 for 11 from the free throw line. She tied the school mark of 38 points earlier this season at Shenandoah on Jan. 2.

Sophomore Charlotte Woods (Richmond, Va./Trinity) registered her seven double-double of the season with 17 points and 15 boards. R-MC held a 53-33 rebounding advantage. The Yellow Jackets pulled down 24 offensive boards.

All 28 of R-MC's field goals came in the paint, as the Yellow Jackets outscored the Hornets 56-32  in the paint.

Williams had five early points as R-MC jumped out to a 10-6 lead midway through the first period. Williams went 4 for 4 from the free throw line to give the Yellow Jackets a 16-11 advantage with 2:07 remaining. SU scored the final five points to make it 16-16 after one. Williams had 11 points in the first period.

The game was tied at 18-18 before Williams was fouled on a layup, but Charlotte Woods put in the follow to give R-MC a 22-18 lead with 6:35 remaining in the second quarter. The Yellow Jackets led 26-22 before Williams had six points in an 8-4 spurt as R-MC took a 34-26 lead with two minutes remaining. The Hornets would score the final three points of the period to trail 34-29 at the break. Williams had 21 points and 11 boards in the first half. All 13 of R-MC's first-half field goals came in the paint, giving the home team a 26-12 advantage on points in the paint.

Williams and Woods both had two layups as R-MC started the third quarter on an 8-0 run, taking a 42-29 lead with 6:15 remaining. The Hornets scored four straight before Woods and Williams added buckets to give the Yellow Jackets a 46-33 advantage with 3:25 left. SU again scored four in a row before a pair of inside baskets by Williams gave R-MC a 50-37 lead after three.

Woods had four points as R-MC started the final period on an 8-4 spurt to take its largest lead at 58-41 with 7:45 remaining. The Yellow Jackets were up 66-52 with just under two minutes left before the Hornets closed the game on a 10-2 run to give R-MC a 68-62 win.

Senior Teal Reynolds (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) paced the victors with six assists.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 27 with a 2 p.m. home ODAC contest against Roanoke. It is Back to the Hive, Alumni Day for the Yellow Jackets.
