Jaquan Javonte Sledge, 23, faces charges of robbery, flee to elude arrest and assault on a female after he allegedly raked money from the cash drawer at Roanoke Rapids Business Center shortly before 7:30 this morning.

Roanoke Rapids Police Department Deputy Chief Andy Jackson said Sledge, of Whitakers, was caught between four to five minutes after the robbery.

He led officers on a chase which ended when he crashed the vehicle he was driving in the area of Fairfield Apartments off Highway 125.

Jackson said Sledge went through a ditch and took out a phone cable box before he was apprehended.

Trooper D.L. Edwards of the state Highway Patrol charged Sledge with careless and reckless driving, hit and run and driving while license revoked.

Sledge also faces a charge of unauthorized use of a vehicle which stems from the January 3 chase.

In a statement, Jackson said police were dispatched to the business shortly before 7:30 this morning.

Sledge allegedly entered the office of the internet sweepstakes business while the clerk was handling other matters and reportedly took cash.

When the clerk realized what was happening, she approached Sledge, who didn’t use a weapon. Sledge walked past the clerk and left the business on a GMC Envoy.

Captain Bobby Martin observed the vehicle on on Vine Street and started a pursuit which ended near Fairfield.

Jackson said descriptions put out and good information given by the business aided in Sledge’s capture.

Sledge received a $15,000 cash bond and February 7 court date.

Sledge was arrested on January 3 after officers responded to a 911 hang-up call in the 100 block of Highway 125.

Officer R. Cross spoke with the resident of the apartment who told him Sledge took their vehicle without permission and later returned.

While Cross was talking with the victim, Sledge got back in the vehicle and fled.

Officers attempted to stop him but he refused.

Sledge continued south on Interstate 95 where the North Carolina State Highway Patrol successfully deployed stop sticks at the Halifax County/Nash County line.
