
ASHLAND, Va. - Sophomore Kelly Williams (Garysburg, N.C./Halifax Academy) recorded her 19th double-double of the season with 23 rebounds and 22 points, passing the 1,000-point mark for her career, as the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team fell 84-77 to Emory & Henry in ODAC action Saturday evening in Crenshaw Gym.
The Yellow Jackets moved to 16-4 overall and 9-3 in conference play. The Wasps went to 16-5 overall and 9-3 in league play.
Williams went 7 for 8 from the floor and hit eight shots from the free throw line. Sophomore Charlotte Woods (Richmond, Va./Trinity) registered her ninth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 boards. Senior Teal Reynolds (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) had 14 points and a career-best seven assists. Junior Kelsey Wisner (York, Pa./Central York) added 10 points.
R-MC jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead. Williams had two buckets, the first giving her 1,000 points in her two-year collegiate career. Following a timeout, E&H used a 10-2 run of its own to tie the score at 12 with 2:55 left in the first period. The Wasps took their first lead at 18-17 with 1:45 remaining before layups by Williams and Reynolds gave the home team a 21-18 advantage with 30 seconds left. E&H hit the final basket of the quarter to pull within one at 21-20.
The Wasps started the second period with a 7-2 spurt to go ahead 27-22 with just under eight minutes left in the quarter. The Yellow Jackets scored six straight to take a 28-27 lead with 5:45 remaining. A 9-2 run by E&H gave the visitors a 36-30 advantage with one minute left. A trey by junior Wisner cut the deficit in half before a bucket by the Wasps and two free throws by Wisner gave E&H a 38-35 lead at intermission. Williams posted 15 points and 12 rebounds in the first half.
E&H started the third period with a three-point play to go ahead 41-35 before Woods had six points in a 9-2 run, giving R-MC a 44-43 edge with 6:30 remaining in the third quarter. The Wasps turned a 5-1 run into a 48-45 lead with 5:10 left. The Yellow Jackets scored three straight to level the score at 48 with 4:19 remaining. A 14-6 stretch by E&H put the Wasps ahead 62-54 before taking a 64-57 lead at the end of the period.
R-MC used a pair of free throws to cut it to five at 64-59 before an 11-6 run gave E&H a 75-65 advantage with 7:45 left in the final period. Woods had two buckets in a 7-0 run as the Yellow Jackets pulled within three at 75-72 with 3:25 remaining. The Wasps scored six straight to extend its lead to 81-72 with 47 seconds left on their way to an 84-77 victory.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 6 with a 7 p.m. home ODAC contest against Bridgewater in Crenshaw Gym.
