An early morning chase in Scotland Neck ended with a crash and the arrest of two people.
Captain Tommy Parker of the Scotland Neck Police Department said officers were initially trying to warn the driver, John Doyle, of Tarboro, of a burned out headlight.
In a statement Parker said, however, Doyle fled from officers around 1 a.m. as they attempted to conduct the traffic stop on Roanoke Street.
During the chase, Doyle stopped the vehicle and as Sergeant Marvin Hilliard got out, put his car in reverse and struck the sergeant’s patrol car, forcing Hilliard to jump out of the way and causing minor damage to the town police cruiser.
The chase continued from Roanoke Street to Highway 125 near Sand Pit Road where Doyle lost control of the vehicle, which flipped several times.
Lieutenant Clint Smith, Officer Jean Marin and Hilliard arrested Doyle and his passenger, Shatikka Phillips of Hobgood. The pair were not severely injured in the aftermath of the crash, Parker said in the statement.
Based on the initial investigation, Parker said it appears speed, drugs and alcohol resulted in the crash.
The state Highway Patrol and Halifax County Sheriff’s Office assisted.
Doyle was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possession of marijuana, driving while license revoked, reckless driving, speeding, felony flee to elude arrest and injury to personal property.
Phillips was charged with aid and abet driving while license revoked.
Doyle was held under $75,000 secured bond and Phillips under a $500 secured bond.
