A Northampton County deputy sustained minor injuries responding to a wreck on Interstate 95 early this morning.
Sheriff Jack Smith said the wreck was attributed to icy conditions on the Interstate 95 bridge.
Trooper J.D. Warren of the state Highway Patrol said there were numerous wrecks early this morning because of the conditions.
He said the wreck involving the deputy and two tractor-trailers occurred on the southbound bridge of the interstate.
Smith said the icy conditions in Northampton were mostly on bridges and overpasses as overnight temperatures were around 28 degrees. Deputies reported it was difficult to stand on the bridges. “There were a bunch of wrecks at I-95 north and south. It shut the interstate down for a while.”
Smith said the state Department of Transportation came out to treat the road. “The interstate is passable. It should be good now.”
While Deputy Matthew Walton’s patrol is considered a total loss, Smith said the officer came out of the wreck with minor cuts on his hand.
Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp said roads in the county are passable, but reminded motorists to “always proceed with caution.”
