Crash knocks house off foundation, DWI charge lodged

A West Fifth Street house was knocked about a foot off its foundation Tuesday night after a pickup crashed into it.

The driver of the 2013 Ford, James Ryan Howell, was charged with careless and reckless driving and DWI, according to a statement by Deputy Chief Andy Jackson of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department.
Jackson said Sergeant M. Moseley responded to the area near the Kemp Avenue intersection shortly before 11:30 p.m. following a report a vehicle struck a house.
The structure sustained major damage, the front section caved in and the house appeared to have been knocked off its foundation.
The Roanoke Rapids Planning and Development Department confirmed today the house was knocked about a foot off its foundation. An unsafe and dangerous dwelling notice was posted the night of the crash, which also knocked the front porch off the house.
The planning department estimated damages to the structure to be approximately $25,800. The owner has indicated repairs will be made.
Jackson said in the statement no one was home at the time of the crash.
Howell, 24,who also has a 30-day civil revocation of his driver’s license due to the DWI, has a February 13 court date.

Fugitive warrant

Around 5:15 Wednesday morning Jackson reported Master Officer J. Salmon arrested Buster Cleveland Thompson Jr., 37, at 403 Monroe Street.
Thompson was wanted on a fugitive warrant from Virginia.
Salmon was conducting an investigation based on information he had been gathering on Thompson’s whereabouts.
He was assisted by Officer Alex Green.
