Halifax Academy alumni Williams continues to shine on the court

EMORY, Va. - Freshman Kelly Williams (Garysburg, N.C./Halifax Academy) recorded her ninth double-double with 13 rebounds and a season-high 25 points, while junior Amber Lee (Rockville, Va./Patrick Henry) had nine boards and a season-best 18 points as the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team scored the final 15 points of the game to rally past first-place Emory & Henry 62-58 on the road Saturday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets (8-4, 3-1 ODAC) have won three straight and five of their past six contests.

The Wasps (9-4, 3-1 ODAC) were ahead 53-43 to start the fourth quarter. E&H led 58-47 with 7:26 remaining, but would not score again. Lee hit a pair of layups to cut it to seven at 58-51 with 6:30 left. Williams hit a free throw and Lee made a jumper as R-MC pulled within four at 58-54 midway through the period. Lee hit another jumper and Williams sank a foul shot to make it a one-point game at 58-57 with 3:49 left. Williams made a free throw one minute later to knot the score at 58-58. Williams made a layup with 1:20 left to give the Yellow Jackets their first lead since the first quarter at 60-58. Kelsey Wisner hit a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left to seal the 62-58 victory. E&H had four turnovers, missed 11 field goals and missed a pair of free throws in the final seven scoreless minutes.

Lee had eight points in the final 15-0 run, while Williams added five.

Wisner paced the Yellow Jackets with four assists. Freshman Michal Ross (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) had seven points, seven rebounds, four steals and three blocks off the bench for R-MC.

After the Wasps hit a three-pointer to start the game, Williams hit a pair of free throws and a layup to give the Yellow Jackets a 4-3 lead two minutes into the contest. The game was tied 10-10 midway through the first quarter before E&H finished the period on a 9-2 run to take a 19-12 edge after one.

The Wasps started the second quarter with a 13-3 run to take a 32-15 lead with seven minutes left in the half. Taylor Intermill hit a jumper to cap a 9-2 spurt as the Yellow Jackets cut the deficit to 10 at 34-24 with three minutes remaining. E&H would take a 38-25 lead to the locker room at intermission.

Williams grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to complete an 11-0 run at the start of the third quarter as R-MC pulled within two at 38-36 with 7:20 left in the period. The Yellow Jackets trailed 43-39 before E&H closed the quarter on a 10-4 run to take a 53-43 advantage to the final period.

After playing its past seven contests away from home, Randolph-Macon returns to Crenshaw Gymnasium on Tuesday, January 10, for a 7 p.m. ODAC contest against Virginia Wesleyan.
