Police investigating possible illegal transport of cigarettes

Hardy takes inventory of the cigarettes.

Roanoke Rapids police are investigating the possible illegal transportation of cigarettes after 150 cartons were discovered on a charter bus which broke down in the city this morning.

The black market value of the cigarettes, which included Marlboro reds and golds, as well as Newports, is approximately $40,000. More than $40,000 in cash was also seized.

Chief Chuck Hasty said the bus was destined for New York when it broke down around the South Street area.
The cigarettes, which were packaged and wrapped, were discovered in the storage area of the bus as officers were assisting. The cash was discovered in the possession of a man after officers observed the bag being passed around.
Federal authorities have been notified to assist with the investigation.
Master Officer R. Ball and officers J. Hardy, G. Colson and S. Blythe investigated.
