Pickleball comes to the T.J. Davis

A demonstrator wearing a pickleball shirt.

Pickleball may be best described as the offspring of tennis and ping-pong, a game played on a small court with a low net, wiffle balls and oversized paddles.

The game was introduced today at T.J. Davis Recreation Center as another offering of the city’s recreation department and demonstrated by members of the Warrenton Pickleball Club of the Two Lakes.

The club seeks to expand pickleball opportunities across the Roanoke Valley and T.J. Davis plans to have sessions each Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon throughout July, said Koy Worrell, the center’s supervisor.

(For more information call Worrell at 252-533-2847)

A regulation tennis court can be divided into four pickleball courts, said Stan Mead, one of the enthusiasts who came to T.J. Davis today. “It allows people of different skill levels to play in a family atmosphere.”

{gallery}pickle{/gallery}

Mead finds it addicting. “We play every single day, twice a day. It’s good for eye-hand coordination and balance. It’s really good for you.”

Mead has seen people as young as 9 to as old as 88 playing competitively.

A player for three years now, he said, “I’m in better shape than I was 10, 20, 30 years ago.”

Stan Brothers is a designated ambassador for the sport through the USA Pickleball Association.Brothers got into the sport when he was visiting Hilton Head and has been playing for six years. “The more I played, the more exercise I got, the more weight I lost.”

There is an active group of 18 to 20 playing in Warrenton and the group has established the game in Emporia.

John Burd came to learn about the game after learning the rec center was offering it. “I watched the video. I’ve never played it.”

Arrest warrants say child was seriously injured in abduction

Arrest warrants for a man charged Wednesday morning with sex counts involving a 1-year-old child allege the victim was both seriously injured and sexually assaulted during an abduction.

ezzelregistry

Ezell's mugshots from the registry.

Search warrants in the case of Alexander Ezell, 25, have been sealed, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office confirmed this morning.

Sheriff Wes Tripp would only confirm this morning there was probable cause found through investigation to file the charges of attempted statutory rape and indecent liberties with a minor against the Roanoke Rapids man, who has been on the state sex offender registry since he was 13.

In the arrest warrant addressing the sex offenses filed in the case, Detective Matt Brown wrote there was probable cause to believe Ezell did allegedly attempt to carnally know and abuse the child and feloniously committed and attempted to commit a lewd and lascivious act upon the child.

Brown also found probable cause Ezell broke into the residence on Cloverleaf Drive outside Roanoke Rapids with the intent to commit kidnapping.

The probable cause, Brown wrote in the arrest warrant, shows Ezell allegedly removed the victim from one place to another “for the purpose of doing seriously bodily injury, terrorizing the victim and subjecting the victim for sexual servitude.”

Brown noted in the arrest warrant the victim was not released in a safe place and was “seriously injured and sexually assaulted.”

The arrest warrants do not detail the injuries sustained.

Brown’s warrants say Ezell also damaged a storm door and lock at the residence he reportedly broke into.

In an arrest warrant addressing the count of resisting a public officer, Detective Justin Matthews wrote Ezell resisted him and Deputy Austin Holland by running from deputies. When confronted he placed his hand behind his back and stated he had a 9mm in his hand.

Brown’s warrant says Ezell broke into and entered the residence around 12:10 a.m.

Sexual battery case

Meanwhile, court documents in Ezell’s sexual battery case which occurred when he was 13, show he was to be tried as an adult but took a plea.

The documents involving the case, which was settled in October of 2009, do not delve into the details of the charges he faced.

They do note he was originally charged with two counts of crimes against nature; three counts of first-degree sex offense and a count of indecent liberties. Those charges were dropped and he took a plea to sexual battery. He received a suspended sentence.

The documents say the original offenses took place between October 1 and November 30 of 2005 when Ezell was 13.

Tripp said the sheriff’s office had already checked on Ezell four times this year, the last being June 27. “We continuously check on the sex offenders in Halifax County. Some other agencies  only check on their offenders once a quarter. We continuously post the sex offender registry on our Facebook page so citizens can know the offenders living in their area.”

Ezell has had no violations while on the registry. Any changes to his status on the registry since Wednesday’s charges “would have to happen after adjudication of these alleged cases,” Tripp said.

Task force roundup: Marijuana counts; heroin paraphernalia; HCSO arrest

The City County Drug Task Force this morning arrested a Roanoke Rapids man for possession of approximately 251.6 grams of marijuana.

Captain A.M. Harris said the arrest of Maurice Ivory Jr. occurred following a two-week investigation by Agent D.J. Epperson.

A search warrant based on the investigation was executed shortly after 8 a.m. by the task force and patrol division of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office at a residence on Nation Road.

Nation Road is located off Highway 48 near the Green Store.

Corporal D. Newsome and his dog Duri assisted, helping agents seized the marijuana and several items of drug paraphernalia including two boxes of plastic bags, a Mason jar and digital scale.

Epperson arrested and charged Ivory with felony possession of marijuana, possession with the intent to sell and deliver marijuana, possession of marijuana paraphernalia and maintaining a dwelling for a controlled substance.

He received a $5,000 bond and July 19 court date.

Thursday arrest

At approximately 4:12 p.m., Epperson and Harris followed up on a drug complaint at a residence on Pearson Hill Road.

During the consent search of Andrew Hardin’s bedroom, five different items of heroin paraphernalia were seized. Harris said the paraphernalia included syringes, spoons with filters and a shoelace.

Epperson cited Hardin, who is on active probation, with a North Carolina Uniform Citation for possession of drug paraphernalia.

He received an August 2 court date.

Sheriff’s office arrest

Harris said Thursday around 11:20 p.m., Lieutenant Steven Casey and Corporal Roy Ball stopped a vehicle on West Tenth Street and Wendover Lane in Roanoke Rapids for a violation.

They seized 314 grams of marijuana.

Harris said Ball charged Christopher Gay with maintaining a dwelling for a controlled substance; possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana; felony possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.

Gay received a $5,000 bond and August 9 court date.

Woman charged after leaving children in car while gaming

Scotland Neck police are continuing an investigation after its officers responded to a report of an infant and toddler in a locked car while their mother was reportedly playing a sweepstakes game Thursday afternoon.

ShaneishaSmith

Captain Tommy Parker said in a statement the police department is trying to determine exactly how long Shaneisha Smith, 21, of Hobgood, reportedly left the children in a running vehicle.

Based on surveillance footage, the children were in the vehicle for at least 40 minutes, Parker said in a statement. He said the time could be longer.

Parker said the air conditioning was running but no one was around the vehicle, which was parked in the lot of a gas company.

The infant and 1-year-old were found around 3:40 p.m. in the backseat and Smith was found inside a gaming establishment.

Based on footage, Parker said in the statement, the infants were left in the car and in direct sunlight while the temperature outside was above 90 degrees.

Sergeant J. Vlasak arrested Smith on two counts of misdemeanor child abuse.

The children appeared healthy and alert and were left in the care of a family member.

The department of social services was contacted and is conducting an investigation.

Parker said in the statement employees and customers of the sweepstakes were unaware of what happened and the owner has permanently banned Smith from the property.

Smith was transported to the Halifax County Detention Center. She has a court date scheduled for August 8. She received a $6,000 secured bond.
