17-year-old girl seriously injured in Hollister crash

A 17-year-old girl is in critical condition following a three-car wreck in the Hollister area this afternoon.

The girl’s father, who was driving a Ford Edge, was listed in serious but stable condition, said Trooper Scott Richardson of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The girl and her father, who are from South Hill, Virginia, were transferred from UNC Nash to Vidant in Greenville.

The third person transferred to Vidant, and the person who reportedly caused the wreck shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Highway 43 at Rosser Road, was listed in stable condition.

In all there were three serious injuries and two minor injuries, Richardson said. Of the three serious injuries, two sustained head injuries and the other a pelvic injury.

The wreck occurred when Glenn Ryland, 45, of Hollister, was driving a Toyota Solara north on Highway 43. He traveled left of the centerline and collided with a Ford Edge driven by Glenn Bugg, the vehicle in which his 17-year-old daughter was a rear, driver’s side passenger. Richardson declined to release the name of the girl.

The southbound Edge collided with a Suburban driven by Krystal Hamledge of La Crosse, Virginia. The five in the Suburban escaped injury, Richardson said.

The Solara came to rest in the northbound travel lane with extensive front end damage. The Ford Edge came to rest on the southbound shoulder with extensive front end damage. The Suburban  came to rest on the southbound shoulder with damage on the passenger side.

Charges of DWI, driving left of center and driving while license revoked are pending against Ryland, Richardson said.

The trooper listed speed and impairment as contributing factors. Richardson estimated Ryland was traveling 65 in a 55 mile per hour zone when the wreck occurred as he was coming out of a slight curve.

Banks' Maxima after the chase.

A Rich Square man was charged late Sunday night in a chase which started in Scotland Neck and ended in Tarboro.

Captain Tommy Parker of the Scotland Neck Police Department said the chase began after Corporal C. Little clocked a Nissan Maxima driven by a man later identified as Marques Banks, 24, leaving town on Highway 258  traveling an estimated 97 miles per hour in a 45 mile per hour zone.

{gallery}snchase94{/gallery}

Little turned on blue lights and siren and Banks accelerated.

Speeds at one point reached 115 miles per hour and Banks lost control of the vehicle several times on Highway 258.

Edgecombe County deputies, the state Highway Patrol and Tarboro police were advised as the chase entered Edgecombe.

Banks lost control of the vehicle as he attempted to make a right turn at the intersection of Highway 258 and Daniel Street, the vehicle going into a ditch and field. Banks maintained control and continued on Daniel Street and into Tarboro.

Banks turned off the vehicle’s headlights and went into the Fairview community of Tarboro where he struck a parked vehicle. The chase continued through the intersection of North Main and Walnut streets where Banks collided with a pickup at the intersection.

Banks struck a light pole, tree and fire hydrant which caused the Maxima to flip several time. The crash caused extensive property damage at the intersection and several businesses were damaged from flying debris, Parker said.

The driver of the F-150 pickup was not seriously injured and was treated for minor injuries. Banks was also treated for minor injuries.

Banks was charged with speeding 97 in a 45, driving while Impaired, felony flee to elude arrest, failure to stop for blue lights and siren, reckless driving to endanger the public, and driving left of center.

Scotland Neck and Tarboro police are working on additional charges.

Parker said in the statement, “Although Banks has an extensive criminal background, his bond was set at $2,500 at the Halifax County Magistrates Office.”

His court date is September 20.

Banks had attempted to flee a roadblock in 2014, the Northampton County Sheriff's Office reported at the time.

Parker acknowledged the assistance from the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office, North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Tarboro Police Department, Tarboro Fire Department and Edgecombe County EMS.

Girl succumbs to injuries sustained in Hollister crash

A 17-year-old girl involved in a crash in the Hollister area died Sunday morning.

Trooper Scott Richardson received notification Sunday morning the girl, Brianna Bugg of South Hill, Virginia, died from injuries sustained in the crash.

She died around 5:30 a.m. at Vidant Greenville where she was transferred following a three-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon on Highway 43, Richardson said.

The girl’s father, Glenn Bugg, remains in stable condition and has gone through two surgeries, Richardson said.

First Sergeant M.O. Silveri said earlier today there will be a consultation with the district attorney’s office to consider upgrading charges against the driver of the vehicle who reportedly caused the crash.

Currently, Glenn Ryland, 45, of Hollister, has pending charges of DWI, driving left of center and driving while license revoked.

Silveri said troopers are looking at upgrading to a charge of felony death by motor vehicle along with the other pending counts.

Richardson listed speed and impairment as contributing factors. He estimated Ryland was traveling 65 in a 55 mile per hour zone when the wreck occurred as he was coming out of a slight curve.

Hobgood traffic fatality

Meanwhile, the state Highway Patrol received notice on August 28 a 76-year-old Hobgood man died from injuries sustained in an August 25 crash.

William Walter Leggett died at Vidant in Greenville.

Leggett had slowed down on Highway 125 for a stranded motorist when a vehicle driven by Hilliard Montague Leggett, 66, of Scotland Neck, struck him from behind, according to a report by Trooper D.L. Edwards.

It was not clear whether the men were related.

Hilliard Leggett has a November 22 court date and has been charged with failure to reduce speed and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Efird honored for rescuing nurse

Efird is flanked by Commissioner Patrick Qualls, who is reading the resolution, and Silveri as Tripp listens.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Dustin Efird was honored today by Halifax County commissioners for actions in July which helped rescue a nurse who languished in her bath tub for three nights after taking a fall.

“This is an example of how law enforcement works together,” Sheriff Wes Tripp said in recognizing Efird for heroism. “We rely heavily on troopers. They rely heavily on us. This is an act of heroism and bravery. Because of this our nurse survived.”

Renee Washington, the nurse who slipped, works at the Halifax County Detention Center.

After she managed to get out of the tub she used the remote to flash the lights of her truck, which parked in the driveway of her Halifax home.

The trooper noticed something was wrong as he was coming back from a call. He turned around after seeing the lights of Washington’s truck flash and found her screaming for help.

“He’s one of our great assets in the county,” said First Sergeant M.O. Silveri. “This action is not surprising.”

Efird thanked the board for recognizing him.

Major Jay Burch, administrator of the jail, said Washington continues to recover. “She’s doing a lot better. She has an appointment in October to see if she’ll be released from the doctors.”

{gallery}halifaxcommissioners96{/gallery}

Deputy honored

The board also honored Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Austin Holland for providing information which helped the Scotland Neck Police Department solve a murder.

“This is going above and beyond the call of duty,” Tripp said. I’m grateful having him serving on the sheriff’s office.”

“You never know what you can do with other agencies,” Holland said. “Working together works.”

Bryant recognized

Meanwhile, the board honored Senator Angela Bryant for her service to the county.

The resolution comes as another round of redistricting is on the table.

“It’s a joy serving as you as senator,” she said. “It’s not the first time they’ve tried to force me out of the district. The redistricting could move me out of the district but nothing is final. There’s much work to do and many unfinished projects to be worked on.”

“Bryant has proven to be a dedicated and extraordinary public servant who has gained the admiration and respect of the Halifax County Board of Commissioners and the citizens of Halifax County,” the resolution said.

The resolution notes Bryant has “demonstrated strong leadership, wisdom, creativity and community spirit while serving on the North Carolina General Assembly, thus enhancing community services, economic development, education, health, transportation and improving Halifax County’s unique quality of life.”

Board Chair Vernon Bryant said, “She and (Representative) Michael Wray, when they’re called upon, they respond 100 percent.”

Scotland Neck 150th anniversary

Commissioners presented Scotland Neck Mayor Eddie Braxton a resolution recognizing the 150th anniversary of the town.

In 1722, a colony of Scotch Highlanders led by Lord Naim settled in the bend of the Roanoke River. “The name Scotland Neck first described the small communities that clustered around this original settlement.”

Nearly 150 years later, John Hyman adopted the name for the town and it was incorporated in 1867. It remains the only town in North Carolina with parking in the middle of Main Street.

“The legacy on which the town of Scotland Neck continues to thrive is demonstrated by its growth, leadership, wisdom, creativity and community spirit while enhancing its unique quality of life and natural resources that consist of beautiful farmland, wildlife and the Roanoke River.”

Said Braxton: “I appreciate the county working with us. We are making progress. Good things are happening.”

The Roanoke Rapids High School Yellow Jackets Men's soccer team continued the winning streak Tuesday night beating Northeastern 6-1.

The Jackets improve to 5-0 with the win and remain 3-0 in the 2A Northern Carolina Conference.

Roanoke Rapids goals where by Carson Neal with four and Cameron Wilson with one and Jake Van Dam with one.

The following Jackets had assist, Emerson Escobar, Cameron Wilson, Carson Neal and Thomas Merritt.

Thomas Merritt had five saves in goal and AJ Pearson had one.

Post match comments by Jackets head coach Craig Jean, "This is a talented group of guys that are playing and working very hard together to achieve our goals. I could tell in the pregame warm ups that we were going to be good in the attacking third tonight. We had some spectacular finishes, made good decisions, and jumped on them quick and never let our foot off the gas until the game was out of reach. There is always room for improvement though. We have got to do a better job of not fouling in the defensive third. It put AJ in another tough situation late in the game, which took away our chance for a shutout, which is something our defenders have been taking a lot of pride in. Overall, it was a great night for the Jackets. We look forward to conference play tomorrow at South Granville. I want to make sure we give a big thank you to Randy Wrenn and RRspin for the only coverage of RRHS soccer games for the past 2 years. It is very appreciated. Our guys have worked very hard for the success they are having and it is nice to see them get the credit they deserve."

The Jackets next scheduled match is Wednesday September 6th away against South Granville.

Second-degree murder charge to be filed in Hollister crash

Bugg's senior portrait for this school year.

The state Highway Patrol will lodge a second-degree murder charge against a Hollister man allegedly responsible for the death of a 17-year-old girl in a three-car collision Saturday.

Sergeant D.O. Guy said the decision to charge Glenn Ryland, 45, with the count came after Trooper Scott Richardson consulted with the district attorney’s office Tuesday.

The charge reflects suspected alcohol use at the time of the crash on Highway 43 in the Hollister area and that Ryland was on probation for DWI, Guy said.

Ryland, according to state Department of Public Safety records, has had two DWI convictions in Halifax County, one on June 2 in which he was sentenced to 24 months probation and one on May 27 of last year in which he was sentenced to 18 months probation. The conviction this year stems from an offense in February of last year while the 2016 conviction stems from an offense in January of 2015.

Other charges filed by Richardson remain active, Guy said. Ryland remains hospitalized but a November 27 court date has been set on the other charges lodged against him.

The girl, Briana Bugg, 17, of South Hill, Virginia, was travelling with her parents to an ECU football game against James Madison when the crash occurred, the South Hill Enterprise reported.

Her sister, Meghann, a JMU student, was traveling with Briana and her parents, Glenn and Tracy. Mr. Bugg was also injured in the crash.

A senior, Briana attended Park View High School and was a member of the softball and volleyball teams. She was the president of the BETA Club and a member of the band.

She died Sunday at Vidant in Greenville where she was transferred following the crash.

Funeral arrangements are currently incomplete.

City and county officials Tuesday honored the groundbreaking of Southern Smiles Orthodontics along with friends, family and the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on what will be its location at 1121 Gregory Drive.

“This occasion has been a long time in the making,” said Dr. Courtney Aman, a Roanoke Rapids native, who plans to have the practice opened by January. “Having spent a decade away from the Roanoke Valley while pursuing my education, it is with excitement that my husband, Eric (Nicholson), and I return to the community where I grew up.”

Dr. Aman said, “We had many choices when deciding where to settle, but ultimately chose to build our businesses and family life in the town that has served me so well. We both look forward to embracing all the positive aspects that a small, close-knit community has to offer and in turn giving back to our community.”

She noted the love and support of friends and family during her journey to reach her educational goals and her dream of being a business owner. “I would like to give special thanks to my husband, Eric, and to my parents Scott and Renee as well as my sister, Emily. I am also very fortunate to have such close relationships with my grandparents and other extended family and friends.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is offering assistance.”

Said Tripp: “I can assure everyone, that as sheriff, I am contacting and utilizing all available resources in working these cases. The reward being offered for the arrest and conviction of the person (or persons) responsible for the killing of these four innocent people stands in excess of $50,000. This case is top priority. The Halifax County Sheriff's Office will not rest until (a) suspect (or suspects) are in custody.”

reward

The sheriff also offered “prayers for the family, friends and all affected by these heinous and atrocious acts.”

Tripp declined this morning to release any new details on the case other than what was shared in Governor Roy Cooper’s recent proclamation offering a reward in the murders of James and Janice Harris and James and Peggy Whitley, which were discovered on August 21 by a family member.

The proclamation says the four were shot through a glass door while they sat playing cards at the dining room table at the Harris residence. All the victims died at the table after they were shot multiple times in an apparent home invasion, the proclamation says.

Tripp also declined to say whether three people arrested in a drive-by shooting in the vicinity of the Harris residence are considered suspects, persons or interest or may have information on the case.
