R-MC women's basketball reach ODAC Championship game

SALEM, Va. – Junior Kelsey Wisner (York, Pa./Central York) scored 13 points to combine with double-doubles by sophomores Kelly Williams (Garysburg, N.C./Halifax Academy) and Charlotte Woods (Richmond, Va./Trinity) to lift second-seeded Randolph-Macon to a 65-62 victory over No. 5 Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the 2018 ODAC Women's Basketball Championship in the Salem Civic Center.

The Yellow Jackets (20-5) will face top-seeded Emory & Henry for the title on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. in the Salem Civic Center. The Marlins end their season at 14-13.

Wisner went 8 for 8 from the free throw line and nailed a three-pointer midway through the fourth quarter to snap a 54-54 deadlock and put R-MC ahead to stay. She also blocked a potential game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer as the Yellow Jackets held on for the victory.

Williams, the ODAC Player of the Year, posted her 24th double-double of the season with 29 points and 16 rebounds. She had seven field goals and made 15 free throws. Woods, an All-ODAC Third Team selection, registered her 12th double-double, with 11 points and 10 boards.

VWU jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead in the game's first three minutes before a pair of free throws by Wisner halted the run. The Marlins were up 15-8 with four minutes left in the period before R-MC used their own 9-2 spurt to knot the score at 17-17 at the end of the first period.

A layup by Woods gave the Yellow Jackets their first lead at 19-17 early in the second quarter. A 14-7 run by the Marlins gave them a 31-26 advantage with 2:40 remaining. R-MC closed the period on a 5-2 spurt, with Williams scoring all five points, as the Yellow Jackets trailed 33-31 at the break. Williams had 15 points and eight boards in the first half. R-MC had just seven field goals in the first half, but hit 17 of 24 free throws (70.8%).

The teams stayed within two points of each other in the first four minutes of the third quarter before a trey by VWU gave it a 44-39 lead with 5:35 remaining. Wisner hit four straight free throws to make it a one-point game at 44-43. The Marlins extended their advantage back to five at 50-45 before a layup by Woods and a three-pointer by junior Jayla Wade (Newport News, Va./Heritage) tied it at 50-50 with 40 seconds left. A pair of free throws with nine seconds on the clock gave VWU a 52-50 advantage after three.

Wisner hit a jumper early in the final period to level the score at 52-52. The Marlins led 54-52 before a layup by senior Teal Reynolds (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) tied it at 54-54 before a three-pointer by Wisner put R-MC ahead for good at 57-54 with just over five minutes remaining. The Yellow Jackets scored their final eight points from the free throw line. Foul shots by Reynolds and Williams gave R-MC its largest lead at 59-54 with 3:15 remaining. VWU cut it to two at 60-58 before Williams sank two free throws to make it 62-58 with 1:10 left. Woods hit a foul shot with 47 seconds left prior to a layup by the Marlins making it 63-60. Williams hit two more free throws with 36 seconds remaining to give the Yellow Jackets a 65-60 advantage. VWU scored with 16 seconds left to make it 65-62. Following a turnover by R-MC, the Marlins had a pair of three-point attempts in the final five seconds, the final on being blocked by Wisner, as the Yellow Jackets prevailed 65-62.

For the game, R-MC hit 31 of 46 free throw attempts for 67.4%.

Barton softball suffers pair of setbacks at Mid-South Classic

DUNCAN, S.C. – The Barton College softball team dropped a pair of games in its first day of competition at the Mid-South Classic on Saturday, falling to Augusta University, 4-0, and UNC Pembroke, 4-3.

Finding offense proved difficult for the Lady Bulldogs (5-7) against the two Peach Belt Conference programs. Barton produced five hits while being shut out by Augusta (4-9), and managed just two hits through the first five innings of the loss to UNCP (10-6).

BC finally warmed up in the sixth inning of the game against the Braves, using singles from Hannah Jones and Brittany Jacobs to set the table for sophomore Sierra Hearp, who ripped a three-run homer to center to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Taylor Freeman singled with two outs in the seventh and reached scoring position as the tying run following a walk to Ashton Pegram, but Malerie Leviner got a groundout to end the game and earn her first save of the year for the Braves.

Barton will continue play in the tournament tomorrow with games against Tiffin University at 9 a.m. and UNCP again at 11 a.m.

Game 1 – Augusta 4, Barton 0

Barton pitchers Hannah Jones (1-4) and Teagan Crosby gave up only seven combined hits to the Jaguars, but too many of them were big ones.

Marni Greenstein tripled in the third inning and scored on a Carolyn Edwards single to give Augusta a 1-0 lead. The two repeated the process in the seventh, as Greenstein again tripled and came home on an Edwards single. Two batters after Edwards’ second hit, Cassie Blizzard ripped her first home run of the season, putting hopes of a Barton rally on ice.

Five different Barton players produced one hit each off Augusta pitcher Morgan Hunter (3-4), who did not walk a batter and struck out four.

Two of those five hits came in the fourth inning, when Jacobs and Pegram singled. Both reached scoring position, but Hunter escaped the inning by inducing a line drive to third base that turned into a double play.

Game 2 – UNC Pembroke 4, Barton 3

UNCP used a leadoff double by Alex Watkins, a single by Tatum Brummitt and then a sacrifice bunt by Toni Nelson to get on the board in the second inning.

The Braves added back-to-back doubles by Cara Davis and Jamie Johnson off Hearp (2-2) to begin the third inning, and yet another double by Brummitt later in the frame to produce a 3-0 advantage.

Johnson doubled again off BC reliever Makayla Meeks in the fifth and scored on a single by Watkins, increasing the UNCP lead to 4-0.

That seemed to be enough behind the pitching of starter Breezy Yelton (6-1), who only gave up a first-inning single to Pegram and second-inning double to Hayley Grizzle over the first 5 2/3 innings.

However, Jones started a two-out rally in the sixth with a single through the left side, Jacobs followed with an infield single to third base, and Hearp cleared the bases with the home run blast to center, her second of the season.

Barton threatened again in the seventh after the Freeman single and Pegram walk, but Leviner stepped to the mound to produce the third out and end the game.

Yelton issued three hits and struck four in her 6 2/3 innings of work.

Meeks, who pitched four innings of relief for Barton, gave up one run and three hits, did not walk a batter or strike anyone out.

Investigation leads to 'shroom' seizures

A continuing investigation resulted in the seizure of 26 grams of mushrooms and other drugs in the Roanoke Rapids area earlier this month as well as several drug charges filed.

{gallery}225shroom{/gallery}

It is an investigation which led to an additional nine pounds being seized, City County Drug Task Force Captain A.M. Harris said in a statement.

The nine-pound seizure was not in Halifax County and not in a neighboring county, Harris said this morning, declining to pinpoint the exact location.

Authorities are not releasing the names of who was arrested in Roanoke Rapids or from whom the nine pounds were seized.

“Right now we just want to inform the community of the different drugs which are available in the Roanoke Valley and this is still being investigated,” Harris said when asked this morning who was arrested in the case.

The Roanoke Rapids seizure conducted by deputies of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office D Squad resulted not only in the 26-gram seizure of psychedelic mushrooms, but  290 grams of marijuana, 27 suboxone strips, drug paraphernalia and currency.

In the statement Harris said agents continued to follow up because of the large amount.

It was during the follow-up investigation agents were contacted by federal authorities and began working together sharing information to identify the Roanoke Valley source of supply.

Due to the initial investigation of this case and the continued investigation of the task force, federal and local agencies seized an additional nine pounds of mushrooms and drug paraphernalia.

In the statement Harris said, “Psychedelic mushrooms, street name ‘shrooms,’ are used as a recreational drug. It affects and alters your thinking process, causes you to see unusual things while your eyes are opened or closed and will alter your sense of time.”

They can be eaten, chewed with food or boiled with tea.

Lieutenant J. Bozard, Sergeant R. Ball, Corporal M. Bishop and Deputy J. Pignanello of the sheriff’s office conducted the initial investigation.

Williams earns MVP as Randolph-Macon wins tournament

SALEM, Va. – Junior Jayla Wade (Newport News, Va. / Heritage) made a baseline drive to break a 68-68 tie with 24 seconds remaining in the game to propel Randolph-Macon to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship in Salem, Va. on Sunday afternoon. It is R-MC's ninth ODAC Tournament Championship and first since 2014. It also avenged an earlier loss to the Wasps 84-77 on February 3 in Crenshaw Gym.

Wade opened the scoring at 9:24 with a bucket. She pushed R-MC out again minutes later, as with 6:28 to go, she helped the Yellow Jackets hit a six point lead at 10-4. After an E&H bucket, sophomore Charlotte Woods (Richmond, Va. / Trinity) helped maintain the six point advantage with a bucket at 5:23 and sophomore Kelly Williams (Garysburg, N.C./Halifax Academy) did the same with 4:44 to go in the first. Wade made the lead eight for R-MC, as with 4:24 to go, she hit a jumper from the right wing to push R-MC up 17-9. The Yellow Jackets continued the rapid pace as senior Teal Reynolds (Sterling, Va. / Potomac Falls) hit a layup on a pass from Williams to give R-MC a ten point lead with 2:53 to go in the period and forcing an E&H timeout. Woods made it a 12 point lead to complete the 6-0 run for the Yellow Jackets before the Wasps would manage another bucket.  That bucket began an answering 7-0 run for E&H that cut the R-MC lead to just five with :53 to go in the quarter. Each team added a bucket in the last 30 seconds, but R-MC maintained its lead heading into the second frame 25-20.

Turnovers plagued R-MC to begin the second quarter and it opened the door for the Wasps. Four Yellow Jacket turnovers led to six E&H points, giving the Wasps the lead 28-27 and forcing an R-MC timeout with 6:43 to go in the period. Over the first four minutes of the quarter, only Wade collected an R-MC bucket. Williams regained the Yellow Jackets' lead as with 5:52, she converted a pair of free throw opportunities. The teams traded buckets until 2:20 to go when E&H began a 6-0 run that gave the Wasps the lead. They held it for about a minute until freshman Elise Knobloch (Glenville, Pa. / Delone Catholic) converted a three-pointer with :31 to go to give R-MC the lead heading into halftime, 39-38.

After E&H opened the second half with a bucket, Randolph-Macon used a pair of scores by Williams to go back up by three 43-40.  E&H answered with a pair of baskets, putting them up by one with 6:30 to go. The buckets were the beginning of an 8-1 E&H run leading to the media timeout at 4:41 and giving the Wasps a four point lead 48-44. Williams broke the run with a pair of free throws and made a critical block on the defensive end to give R-MC the offensive opportunity – which the Yellow Jackets converted by way of a layup by Williams with 3:54 to go, tying the game again at 48. After trading buckets, a pair of R-MC turnovers led to four E&H points and a Wasp 54-51 lead. Williams got two free throw opportunities with 1:07 to go, which she converted to bring the score back within one. Junior Kelsey Wisner (York, Pa. / Central York) hit a three-pointer to give R-MC the lead for a moment before E&H tied the game again, this time at 56. Both teams closed the quarter with points – R-MC with a free throw and E&H with a layup – sending the game to the fourth quarter with the Wasps in the lead 58-57.

The points came slowly to begin the fourth quarter. Over the first four minutes of play, both teams scored less than five point each. Reynolds tied the game after stealing the ball away from the Wasps' Kara Stafford and Reynolds converted the fast break to tie the game at 62 with 5:16 remaining. Williams broke the tie as she hit a layup with 4:17 remaining and Reynolds continued the run with a bucket to push the lead up to four with 3:34 to go. Knobloch added a pair of free throws to make the run 6-0 and the R-MC lead six points with 2:56 to go. R-MC's defense kept the Wasps off the board for nearly six minutes of play. E&H did not get points until a pair of free throws by Chloe Harris with 1:44 to go, cutting R-MC's lead to four. Following the free throws, E&H got another bucket from Sydney McKinney, cutting R-MC's lead to just two with 1:06 left. Seconds later, E&H converted two foul shots to tie the game at 68 with :52 remaining. Coming out of a timeout, both teams turned the ball over with Randolph-Macon ending up with the ball and taking another timeout. Out of the second timeout, Wade drove the baseline to make a layup under the basket giving R-MC the two point advantage, 70-68 with :24 to play. E&H took a series of three shots with under :15 to play, but could not convert any of them and turned the ball over. Wade was fouled and closed out the game with a pair of free throws for the 72-68 victory.

Williams finished with 31 points and 20 rebounds.  She also made two assists and two blocks. Wade was also in double figures, scoring 13 points and making two steals. Reynolds finished with nine points and five rebounds while also making two steals. Woods and Knobloch each had eight points, with Woods adding 13 rebounds on the afternoon. Wisner had the lone three-pointer along with four rebounds, four assists and a steal. Freshman Becca Arrington contributed two rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Williams, who was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player in addition to being the conferences' Player of the Year, scored more points than any other player in the conference tournament with 79 over three games. The previous record holder was Megan Silva in 2006. Her 60 rebounds also sets a new conference record, displacing the 44 rebounded by Nicci Moats for Roanoke in 2011.

Reynolds and Woods were both named to the All-Tournament team for their work over the three games. They each scored 28 points throughout the three games. Reynolds added eight assists, five steals and 13 rebounds. Woods tallied 39 rebounds, five steals and four assists. Wade was also a big piece of the tournament for R-MC, scoring 32 points over the three-game span.

Randolph-Macon now awaits for the NCAA Selection Show to find out the location of its regional matchup. The selection show will air tomorrow at 2:30 PM on NCAA.com

Halifax County mushroom seizure tied to Elm City case

An investigation which began in Halifax County after 26 grams of psychedelic mushrooms were seized earlier this month in Roanoke Rapids is tied to a case in Wilson County where two men were arrested last week.

It was in Elm City where the 9 pounds of mushrooms the City County Drug Task Force mentioned in a statement were seized, according to a report Friday posted on the website of the Wilson Times.

The paper reported that last Tuesday the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office assisted the United States Marshals Service in the arrest 25-year-old William Cody Dunn, who was wanted in New Jersey on a probation violation

Deputies found an active grow operation of mushrooms inside Dunn’s home, which is located east of Elm City.

The newspaper reported the execution of a search warrant at the residence led to the seizure of 4,290 grams of prepackaged psilocybin mushrooms, digital scales, a drug ledger and a gallon-size bag of empty capsules.

Dunn was arrested on the scene for the outstanding fugitive warrant and charged with manufacturing a Schedule I controlled substance.

He was jailed without opportunity for bond on the fugitive charge and received a $5,000 secured bond on the drug charge.

He is scheduled to appear in court on March 6, according to state court records.

Authorities also arrested Lance Jackson Morris Jr., 24, of the same address. He faces a charge of manufacturing a Schedule I controlled substance, according to the Times account.

He received a $3,000 secured bond and also has a March 6 court date.

Captain A.M. Harris of the task force said today the investigation of the 26 grams of mushrooms seized in Halifax County continues. The task force has declined to release the name of the person or persons arrested in the Roanoke Rapids case because of the ongoing investigation.

In the task force statement released Sunday, Harris said the Roanoke Rapids seizure conducted by deputies of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office D Squad resulted not only in the 26-gram seizure of psychedelic mushrooms, but  290 grams of marijuana, 27 suboxone strips, drug paraphernalia and currency.

In the statement Harris said agents continued to follow up after the seizure because of the large amount.

It was during the follow-up investigation agents were contacted by federal authorities and began working together sharing information to identify the Roanoke Valley source of supply.

Due to the initial investigation of the Roanoke Rapids case, the task force, federal and local agencies seized the additional nine pounds of mushrooms and drug paraphernalia.

Subsequent to testing, Rudd had a Breath Alcohol Content of .15.

Probable cause was found for DWI and driving while license revoked based on impairment.

He received a custody release and has a court date of March 19.

On February 22 around 9:40 p.m., Little and Corporal Shatel Coates stopped a vehicle on South Dennis Street for a motor vehicle violation.

During the investigation, Little determined the driver, Calvin Williams, of Enfield, was intoxicated and driving without a license.

Throughout the arrest, Williams was argumentative and belligerent.

Williams blew a .19 and refused further testing.

Williams also fought with Little during processing and broke a chair in the DWI screening room in Halifax.

Williams was charged with DWI, driving while license revoked based on impairment, assault on a government official, resisting a public officer, communicating threats, intoxicated and disruptive behavior, injury to personal property, drive vehicle while registration plate not displayed, unregistered motor vehicle, and operating a vehicle with no insurance.

Davis said approximately two weeks ago the license plate on Williams’ vehicle was seized due to a DMV pickup order.
