Dancing in the seats: Brencore prepares theater Motown show

Smoot and Davis

Robert Smoot is hopeful his February 11 A Tribute to the Music of Motown concert will be the first of several he brings to the Roanoke Rapids Theatre throughout the year.

Scheduled for 8 p.m., the concert will bring to life the songs of the early years of Motown — The Temptations, The Four Tops, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Smokey Robinson, Junior Walker and the Allstars, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, and Gladys Knight and the Pips.
This will be Brencore Entertainment’s second event at the theater and the third in Halifax County after bringing a show to The Centre on the campus of Halifax Community College last year.
“It’s just an amazing venue,” Smoot said of the theatre, located off Interstate 95. “We have people coming from Raleigh.”

To purchase tickets:

Advanced reserved seating tickets online at the theater website

Day of event general admission tickets will be available at the theater box office, which will be open at 10 a.m. the day of the show

VIP box seats are available for groups by contacting the box office at 252-538-3824

He has worked out a special deal with the Hampton Inn for those who want to the stay the night after the performance. “I love to come here. It takes everyone working together. We can have people coming here to see a beautiful venue. It should be open every Friday and Saturday night.”
Smoot’s sister, Debbie Davis, says she calls the venue the Kennedy Center of North Carolina. “It’s just gorgeous.”
Smoot has become a successful event promoter in the Washington, D.C., and Fredericksburg, Virginia, areas, and has also forged a good relationship with city officials in Roanoke Rapids. “I’ve been blessed,” he said. “The city has been very good to me. I almost feel like I’m home.”
The upcoming show, he is said, is a way for him to “give the area the entertainment it deserves.”
The Motown tribute, Davis said, will be a professional production, with many of the artists having their own national careers. A 14-piece band will perform as the concert carries the audience through the early 60s to the Jackson 5.
“It’s a production that’s as close to Motown as you can get,” Smoot said. “It’s the real deal.”
Davis said the act has become so precise a Motown Christmas show has been produced that she and Smoot, through Brencore Entertainment would like to bring to the theater.
With the show three days before Valentine’s Day, Davis said the concert is a great lead-in. “It’s an excellent concert to bring friends, girlfriends, wives as a Valentine’s gift.”
Smoot and Davis have been promoting the show within a 100-mile radius of Roanoke Rapids and have discussed bringing a blues festival as well as tributes to artists such as Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston and Franklin.
For now the focus is on the Motown Tribute. “If you love Motown, you need to be here,” Smoot said. “You will enjoy the whole production. It’s got a little bit of everything. We’ll have you dancing in your seats.”
Roanoke Rapids Parks and Recreation Director John Simeon is one of the people Smoot notes as having forged a successful relationship with. “I’m looking forward to working with Brencore and pleased to have them back in Roanoke Valley,” Simeon said.

Roanoke Rapids native Natalie English was named the president and CEO of the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce Board.

Board Chairman Charlie Mattox made the announcement in a chamber press release today.
A 1985 graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School, English takes the place of Interim President Dick Blouse effective March 6.
The daughter of Al and Nell Haskins of Aurelian Springs, English currently serves as chief public policy officer for the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce where she manages the chamber’s efforts to affect policy relating to business issues at all levels of government.
“Natalie’s 30 years of experience monitoring legislative and regulatory issues is a perfect fit to lead and enhance our advocacy efforts regionally, statewide, and even at the federal level,” Mattox said. “She has a strong track record of success and has been responsible for building community support for several investments in infrastructure that have been key to Charlotte’s economic development. Her leadership experience and background in affecting policies that impact the cost and ease of doing business, quality of life and workforce will help take the Wilmington business community and our Chamber to new heights.”
Her role as chief public policy officer included managing campaigns for community referenda which helped lead to the passage of more than $5 billion in infrastructure investments since 2006.
In 2007, she served as the chief staff person managing the Vote Against Repeal campaign and the campaign to push for passage of four county bond referenda to improve infrastructure in the Charlotte community.
The Vote Against Repeal campaign successfully convinced 70 percent of Mecklenburg County voters to defeat the effort to repeal the dedicated funding source for Charlotte’s mass transit program and all four bond issues passed.
She received her B.A. in communications from North Carolina State University, and achieved her designation as a Certified Chamber Executive in 2012, one of only approximately 700 in the world.
In 2010, the National Association of Women Business Owners – Charlotte Chapter awarded her with its Community Service Award.
In 2008, she was awarded the Marshall Memorial Fellowship and completed a 25-day trip to Europe to learn about and advance trans-Atlantic relations.
She was named as a 2008 Women in Business Achievement Award Winner by the Charlotte Business Journal and in 2009 and 2013 the Mecklenburg Times named her one of the 50 Most Influential Women in Charlotte.
English has also been an active volunteer, having served on the board of MeckEd, Partners in Out of School Time , Leadership Charlotte, the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, Alexander Youth Network, United Way, Charlotte Mecklenburg Workforce Development Board, the North Carolina Center for Public Policy Research, and Junior Achievement.
She currently serves as president of the Charlotte Rotary Club.
"I am thrilled with the opportunity to lead the chamber staff and volunteers in partnership with elected and government officials to do great things in Wilmington,” English said. “It has long been a career goal of mine to lead a chamber in a vibrant community full of potential and I can think of no better place to do that than the Port City. I look forward to getting to know the people behind the businesses that have made Wilmington so successful, and I am excited to soon make it my home.”
