From Ringwood Road to Roanoke Rapids, City County Drug Task Force agents started the day early, arriving in the Enfield area around 7 a.m. and finishing up this afternoon on Church Street in the city.

“We’ve been getting complaints of activity on Church Street,” task force Captain A.M. Harris said this evening.
Roanoke Rapids police Chief Chuck Hasty said the complaints coming from Church Street describe the residential area off Highway 158 as an open-air market which goes 24-7. “You get what you want,” he said.
“The task force and the police department will continue to focus efforts on there,” Hasty said. “It’s a coordinated effort between the patrol and task force on following up on complaints. We want to show our cooperation and dedication in working together to curb the trade.”
Since a heroin arrest Tuesday, 11 people have been cited or charged and nearly a pound of marijuana has been seized, Harris said.

Lady Jackets recognize 2017 seniors Wednesday night

The Roanoke Rapids Lady Yellow Jackets soccer team hosted the Bunn Wildcats Wednesday night at Hoyle field and  recognized their 2017 seniors.

The Yellow Jackets lost the match 3-2.

Goals for Yellow Jackets were by Kristy Price and Ella King.

Post match comments from Jackets head coach Craig Jean "Kristy finished off the regular season of a great 4 year career at RRHS. I never would have imagined she would finish playing on the field for 80 minutes instead of in goal. She has been a lot of fun to watch over the years. Kristy has been in goal for us during some awesome playoff wins and tough playoff losses.
Erica Whitmire is another great athlete that came on to play for us this year. She caught on very fast and has been playing well. I thought she had a great game tonight- she played aggressive and made some very smart plays.  She is a hard worker and has a positive attitude, and that is beneficial to any team. Hopefully, we will get another game or two in the playoffs before their careers as high school athletes are totally over. "

Senior night:
Kristy Price GK/#17- Parents are Dan and Renee Price. Kristy is a 4 year starter for the lady Jackets soccer team and has served as a team captain for this season. She was a member of the 2014 and 2015 Northern Carolina Conference Champions teams. She has a 4 year regular season record of 46-19-5 with a playoff record of 5-3. Currently this season she has 8 goals on the field and 208 saves in the goal. Kristy plans to attend Barton College in the fall and major in Business and Accounting.

Erica Whitmire #14- Parents are Jim and Tina Whitmire. This is Erica's first year playing for the lady Jackets soccer team. She will attend Pitt Community College in the Fall and major in Occupational Therapy.

The women do a mock run for reporters before the real run began this morning.

From the Hilton Garden Inn this morning, women coping with and affected by mental health issues began their run from awareness.

As they run to Surf City the women of Team Inspire will be posting their progress via their Facebook page, said Jessica Blackburn. “A lot of people are already following us.”
Called the North Carolina Icebreaker Run, Blackburn said running has, “Helped me get out. I’m one that holds back. I haven’t talked about it. Life is like a journey with ups and downs. We want to let people know it’s OK not to feel good.”

{gallery}teaminspire{/gallery}

Rebecca Moxley, one of the people who helped spearhead the 170-mile run said, “This is personal for me. Last year I found my voice.”
She has learned to open up. “I’m sober. It’s time to share my story you can find hope and survive and be happy again.”
Blackburn said she grew up athletic. “Exercise is my motivation. Even when I don’t feel too well I know that run is good for my mental health.”
It doesn’t have to be running, Blackburn said. “It can be anything,” from sewing to other activities which help people to soothe themselves. “We’re going to be seeing a lot of North Carolina, a lot of backroads. We’ll be diligent.”
Nancy Hux, who works in mental health in Halifax County, has been a liaison for the team. “It’s a great way to raise awareness of the stigma and breaking down barriers so people can understand recovery is possible.”

Historic site to move time forward for Regency Day

A print called The First Quadrille at Almack's provides an example of Regency Period attire.

Historic Halifax will advance time a few years ahead to around 1815 for Regency Day Saturday.

In American, the Regency Period was called the Federalist Period, Site Manager Robert Bemis said.
The Regency Period in Great Britain marked the time when King George III was deemed unfit to rule.
“This will be the first time we’ve ever had this event,” Bemis said. “We have the structures of the time period and space to sprawl out.”
It marked a period when William R. Davie was named emissary to Napoleon and American was getting involved in the War of 1812. “There’s a little bit of a Napoleonic influence,” Bemis said.
Halifax remained a major city.

Friends, family and those searching for clues in the case of a woman missing since February of 2010 will honor her in Scotland Neck Saturday.

The event will be held at the Scotland Neck Library at 2 p.m., said Kim Wallace, who has been involved in local missing person cases since her friend, Amy Bridgeman, was reported missing nearly four years ago.
On Saturday, they will remember Jalesa Reynolds who was 18 when she was reported missing.

“We want to remember them all and Jalesa. If we don’t keep them in the public eye, people tend to forget them,” Wallace said. “Jalesa was a very young, innocent young lady. It could happen to anybody.”
Wallace said there will be speakers including at least one person from the Reynolds family. “We’ll light candles. We’re going to pray.”
Information released in 2010 shows a search of IP addresses led investigators to discover the Reynolds used a computer at a house on Cemetery Road outside Scotland Neck.
Investigation also shows she frequented the Scotland Neck library daily where she used Facebook and other social networking websites. After visiting the library she would go to the satellite community college where she worked on her graduate equivalency diploma.
Police at that time seized the library computer and sent it to the State Bureau of Investigation lab where agents discovered she used a computer at the Cemetery Road house.
Wallace said the group advocating for the missing wants to do more throughout the year to raise public awareness of the victims such as provide water and Gatorade to officers searching for missing people or man phone lines. “We’re going to work with law enforcement.”
For Wallace, the continued search for Bridgeman has helped her. “It’s kind of given Amy’s disappearance purpose. It gives me something positive out of it.”

The other man they are looking for is 21-year-old Saquan Linwood Vincent who lives in the Littleton area.
Harris said there were two sales, one by Thaxton on March 24, and a second one by Vincent on March 27. Both times user amounts of cocaine were sold.

After the first sale on March 24, Thaxton facilitated another deal which was completed on March 27.
Harris said in a statement on March 24 agents received information from the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division about a man wanting to sell cocaine.
Agents C.A. Parker and D.W. McKeel followed up and Thaxton reportedly agreed to meet Parker at a convenience store at the intersection of Highway 158 and Thelma Road where the first deal occurred.
Three days later agents continued the investigation and Parker contacted the source of supply and was directed to go to a residence on Faulcon Road in which the man eventually identified as Vincent would sell cocaine in the second deal.
McKeel obtained warrants for the arrest of Thaxton for possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, sell cocaine, deliver cocaine and conspire to sell and deliver cocaine. Vincent has warrants for possession with the intent to sell and deliver cocaine, sell cocaine and deliver cocaine.
“The outcome of the investigations was great,” Harris said in the statement. “Agents worked together to ensure the safety of other agents.”
Thaxton and Vincent are encouraged to surrender to local law enforcement.
