Yellow Jackets sting Bulldogs and advance to host second round NCHSAA State playoffs

The #11 seeded Roanoke Rapids High School Yellow Jackets Varsity Baseball team defeated the #25 seeded Trinity High School in the first round of the NCHSAA 2A State Playoffs by a score of 4-0 Wednesday night at Doyle Field.

The Bulldogs put runners on first and second in the top of the 1st inning, but pitcher Colby Warren induced an inning ending groundout.  This would be the last time Trinity would get a runner in scoring position for the game.

The Yellow Jackets broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 3rd inning.  Jordan Collins led off with a walk.  Tommy Bradley followed with a single to right field.  Bracy Irby laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out.  Cameron Rogerson followed with a 2 RBI single to give RRHS a 2-0 lead.

The score would stay that way until the bottom of the 5th inning.  Tommy Bradley led off the inning with an infield single.  Bracy Irby followed him with a bunt single to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs.  Cameron Rogerson then delivered again with another RBI single.  Colby Warren would drive in Irby with a sacrifice fly to deep center field to make the score 4-0 after 5 innings.

Colby Warren would make the lead hold up by retiring the final 15 batters he faced in the game.  Warren pitched the complete game shutout to get the win.  He gave up only 2 hits while striking out 7 batters.

Coach Mark Snead stated, "We played a great game tonight.  That is the way you win playoff games.  Colby did an excellent job on the mound.  He pitched one of his best games of the year.  Our defense was stellar behind him.  We played nearly flawless in the field and picked each other up all night.  Finally on offense, we got production from the whole lineup.  The bottom of the order got on base to set up the top of the lineup for RBI opportunities.  We then got timely hits to score the runs off a strong pitcher.  We have to continue to play strong in all 3 phases of the game to keep advancing in the playoffs."

With the win the Yellow Jackets (19-3) advance to the second round of the NCHSAA 2A State Playoffs.  RRHS will host East Duplin, who were 8-7 winners over Midway in the first round, at Doyle Field.

The day and time will of the 2nd round game will be determined on Thursday morning.

Harris fields a phone call on Duke Street Wednesday evening.

City County Drug Task Force agents Wednesday served three search warrants, two on Duke Street and one on Roanoke Avenue.

The search warrants were all based on complaints of marijuana transactions.
Captain A.M. Harris said a search warrant served at 121 Duke Street was based on complaints of traffic coming in and out of the neighborhood off Vine Street and staying for only a short amount of time.
The 121 Duke Street address was the second search warrant served in the neighborhood. A search warrant was served earlier at 105 Duke Street.
Children played on a swing attached to a tree or kicked a ball around as agents went about the task of collecting evidence.
At the first Duke Street residence, agents seized marijuana and items of paraphernalia.
Harris arrested Raymond Price, 55, for an outstanding order for arrest. He received a $1,000 bond and June 9 court date.
He also obtained a warrant for the arrest of Darius Dewayne Lewter, 28, for possession of marijuana up to one-half ounce, possession of marijuana paraphernalia and maintaining a dwelling for a controlled substance.
In the second Duke Street search warrant agents seized marijuana paraphernalia.
The investigation was conducted by Agent C.A. Parker, who cited Marcus Amaz Lewter, 33, for possession of paraphernalia. He has a June 21 court date.
The Duke Street warrants were served between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Roanoke Rapids and Weldon police assisted, with Weldon Sergeant T.L. Mason using his dog Rio.
Shortly before 8 p.m., the task force served a search warrant on Roanoke Avenue and seized paraphernalia.
Agent D.R. Radford conducted the investigation and cited Jeanette Teresa Smith, 53, with a North Carolina Uniform Citation for possession of drug paraphernalia and Arthur Edward Johnson, 34, for possession of marijuana up to one-half ounce.
Smith and Johnson have June 21 court dates.
Radford obtained a warrant for the arrest of Antonio Johnson, 33, for possession of marijuana paraphernalia.

Termination of original theater bond package completed

The completion of terminating the city’s original bond package which led to the construction of the Roanoke Rapids Theatre is expected to fill a nearly $400,000 gap of a loss in privilege license fees taken away by the state.

It could also result in consideration of cost of living increases for employees, City Manager Joseph Scherer said today.
The city completed the termination of the the 2007 Music and Entertainment District bond package Wednesday and forged a new loan agreement with Bank of America.
Scherer said the city was locked in at a tax exempt interest rate of 2.54 percent , a lower rate than originally quoted.
The 2007 bond package financed the construction of the venue and provided operating capital and operational costs.
In a statement on the matter today, Scherer said the new agreement calls for the Local Government Commission to issue City Music and Entertainment District special revenue refunding bonds series 2017A and 2017B to Bank of America to finance the refunding of the original 2007 bonds, pay the cost of the bond swap agreement termination and pay associated costs incurred with these financial transactions.
The total cost of these actions is to be approximately $15,500,000. This is the remaining amount owed on the original 2007 bonds plus the transaction costs. The LGC approved the termination last week.
“At the end of the day, these actions will allow us to do away with the uncertainty of our annual payments on bonds that have a variable interest rate which continue to trend upward, along with numerous fees and transaction costs and instead establish a fixed rate loan that we can budget for with certainty into the future,” Scherer said in the statement. “Plus, our annual payment will be much lower than what we pay now to Bank of America, giving us some income to make up for the loss of revenue by state legislature decisions.”
Scherer said by telephone today, “The savings are filling the budget from the loss of privilege license revenue of almost $400,000. We don’t have a whole lot of extra money. We’re still having theater expenses. We hope to apply the savings to personnel and their benefits. We’re going to try to give them a cost of living adjustment. I think our people do an outstanding job. We’re going to see if we can’t help that situation.”
He said the city will probably not look at capital expenditures in the upcoming fiscal year. “We may address that next year when we have two capital loans coming off the books.”
Mayor Emery Doughtie said in the statement, “This arrangement will allow us to continue to provide the level of services our citizens have come to expect without forcing us to spend down our savings funds.”
Scherer said the city will continue to market the venue for sale and encourage future development in the area as was originally intended.
He said there are no current serious offers on the table for buying the venue.
As far as encouraging development in the area, he said, “At this point we have to look at some ideas with (county economic development director) Cathy (Scott) and the county to see what opportunities there are with regards to traffic on Interstate 95.”
