Man who caused school lockdown caught soon after fleeing

A Garysburg man who fled while being detained by law enforcement Tuesday was taken into custody a short time later.

The matter caused Roanoke Rapids High School to be put on what was termed a soft lockdown in the school district’s automated alert system as Kevin Earl Elrod, 20, was spotted fleeing toward that area.
Roanoke Rapids police Chief Chuck Hasty said in a statement Elrod was arrested and charged at approximately 1 p.m. for larceny and possession of stolen goods and was also served an outstanding order for arrest for a probation violation.
He received a $2,500 bond and January 6 court date.
Elrod’s arrest came after Lieutenant B. Norton responded to a Roanoke Avenue business about him reportedly trying to sell stolen property.
Norton detained Elrod for investigation while he spoke with business personnel. During that time Elrod fled and was taken back into custody near Washington Street and Roanoke Avenue after concerned citizens reported seeing him in the area.
The stolen property was reportedly taken from a business breaking and entering in Gaston, which is being investigated by the town’s police department.
