Deputy coat drive underway

Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp and First Baptist Church on Becker Drive are partnering for the second Deputy Coat Drive for Kids.

Last year more than 1,000 new and slightly worn coats were given away, Tripp said. “It’s just another form of helping the children in Halifax County. Kids grow up fast and outgrow their clothes. It’s a way of helping someone else in need.”

Deputies see the need daily, Tripp said. “Talking with school resource officers, they see the need for a coat drive. It takes in the spirit of doing unto others as you would have done unto you. There is still a desperate need to help our children.”

Drop-off points for the coats are B&J’s Cash and Carry on Becker Drive and the sheriff’s office in Halifax. A pickup can be arranged by a deputy by calling Tripp at 252-578-6761.

We were rattled early, but we finally settled down and put the game away late in the 1st half. We are going to have to play a lot better next week vs Bunn at RRHS on Monday (3rd place in conf with 1 loss)and at Granville Central on Wednesday (tied with us for 1st with no losses). I was glad to see the starters finish the 1st half and start 2nd half playing pretty good. I look forward to seeing how we compete next week. "

City County Drug Task Force agents have been actively following up on drug complaints throughout the county by conducting saturated patrols and traffic checking stations.

On Wednesday and Thursday agents encountered the following:

Princess Anthony, 34, of Scotland Neck, was in possession of marijuana.

Anthony was cited by Agent D.R. Radford with a North Carolina Uniform Citation for possession of marijuana up to one-half ounce and driving while license revoked.

Joshua Hilliard, 27, of White Oak Road, Enfield, was arrested at the One Stop Food Mart in Ringwood after he ran from agents while throwing marijuana.

With the assistance from Radford and his dog, Tony, 11.2 grams of marijuana was recovered.

A search warrant was applied for and granted for the vehicle. Marijuana was seized.

Parker obtained warrants for the arrest of Lynch for possession of marijuana up to one-half ounce and maintaining a vehicle and dwelling for a controlled substance.

Halifax Regional recognized for donor tissue care

Halifax Regional Medical Center has earned national recognition for its efforts in donor tissue care.

The hospital was recognized as the first in the nation to use X-ray imaging in an innovative new way to preserve tissue donation opportunities on a medical examiner case.

Halifax Regional was honored with this distinction by Carolina Donor Services.

The announcement was made today by Halifax Regional’s President and Chief Executive Officer Will Mahone.  “Our goal is to save lives, and we are proud to be recognized for our commitment in helping tissue donation recipients and their families receive a new chance at life. At Halifax Regional, we work every day to save lives and honor the gift of donation. We are extremely appreciative of the generosity of our donor families.”

A life saved by an organ donation is a miracle for one family, even as it represents a loss for another.

Halifax Regional has long been committed to serving donors, their families and those preparing to receive a new chance at life.

As a result of the hospital’s efforts, donations took place in collaboration with the forensic investigation serving the donor, their family, waiting recipients and the state medical examiner system.

Halifax Regional’s tissue preservation and donation efforts were spearheaded by Charlotte Ferguson, manager of the hospital’s Emergency Care Center.

“Tissue donations must be preserved within a very short period of time. We’ve pioneered a way to speed up the process, with the use of imaging, to allow the gift of donation on medical examiner's cases,” Ferguson said. “The teamwork, out-of-the-box thinking and dedication involved are the reasons we’ve been recognized with this national award. The award is truly the result of outstanding collaboration between Halifax Regional staff, paramedics and medical examiners.”

Ryland jailed on $500K bond after 2nd-degree murder count lodged

The man charged in the traffic death of a 17-year-old Virginia girl is now in custody in the Halifax County Detention Center on $500,000 bond.

This comes after the North Carolina State Highway Patrol filed a second-degree murder charge against the 45-year-old man, Glen Anthony Ryland, of Hollister, First Sergeant M.O. Silveri said today.

Silveri said the patrol is working with the district attorney’s office in the case on obtaining a subpoena for medical records, which would show Ryland’s blood alcohol content at the time of the crash the afternoon of September 2 on Highway 43 in the Hollister area.

Briana Bugg, a senior at Park View High School in South Hill, died the following day from injuries sustained in the crash.

The second-degree murder charge was added after a review of Ryland’s driving record last week.

The highway patrol said last week that review shows Ryland was on probation for DWI when the crash occurred as Bugg and her family were traveling to Greenville for an ECU football game.

Ryland, according to state Department of Public Safety records, has had two DWI convictions in Halifax County, one on June 2 in which he was sentenced to 24 months probation and one on May 27 of last year in which he was sentenced to 18 months probation. The conviction this year stems from an offense in February of last year while the 2016 conviction stems from an offense in January of 2015.

Court officials declined to comment on the probation sentences. One did say privately the sentences he received are fairly common.

District Attorney Valerie Asbell said earlier this week, “The officer made contact with the DA’s office and while Trooper (Scott) Richardson continues to investigate we will aid law enforcement in any way possible.”

What has surfaced since the initial inquiry into the recent and past Halifax County charges is that Ryland has pending charges in Warren County where he is scheduled to appear in court on November 15 for DWI; possession of open container; civil revocation; driving while license revoked impaired driving; fail to maintain to lane control and hit and run/fail to stop for property damage.

In September of 2013 he had a DWI charge dismissed for lack of evidence in Northampton County.

In 1990 in Northampton County he had a conviction of DWI which ended with a 30-day sentence and 12-months probation.

Richardson said earlier this week the investigation is ongoing and other charges are possible including felony counts.

According to the latest Halifax County District Court calendar, Ryland has court dates in September and November.

On September 20 he is scheduled to appear in court for DWI, driving while license revoked, civil revocation and probation review.

The state Department of Public Safety earlier this week declined comment on what their recommendation would be be for the probation review.

Silveri said the Highway Patrol has no input into the probation review unless asked by DPS.

Ryland is also expected to face the second-degree murder charge on September 20.

On November 27 Ryland is expected to appear in district court on the charges of DWI, driving while license revoked, speed in excess of 55 miles per hour, drive left of center, reckless driving to endanger and fail to maintain lane control.

Last person wanted in vehicle shooting arrested

The last person wanted in an August 27 shooting was arrested Friday afternoon, Roanoke Rapids police Chief Chuck Hasty reported.

Keyshaun Diarell Boswell was arrested following a traffic stop in the 400 block of Jackson Street.

Boswell, 20, was taken into custody around 3:15 by Officer A. Green, who made the stop.

Boswell, of Littleton, faces a count of shooting into an occupied vehicle, a crime which occurred in the 300 block of Madison Street.

Brothers Zatez and Xavion Perry were arrested earlier in the case.

Hasty said it remains unclear why the three allegedly shot into the occupied vehicle around 12:30 a.m.

Boswell was also charged with carrying a concealed weapon and driving without a license.

He received a $6,000 bond and  September 29 court date.

Eric Short Jr., 20, a passenger in the vehicle, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

Hasty said Short was not involved in the Madison Street shooting.

He received a $2,000 bond and the same court date as Boswell.

Sergeant M. Mosely, Master Officer J. Hardy and Officer S. Blythe assisted.

HP continues Saturday night chase probe

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol continues its investigation into a chase which started late Saturday night on Interstate 95.

Trooper Levern Bynum said he clocked a vehicle around 11 p.m. traveling 86 in a 70 mile per hour zone at the 169 milemarker in Roanoke Rapids.

Bynum pursued the vehicle, which left the interstate at the 168 exit. The vehicle turned onto Highway 903 and headed north to Old Halifax Road. The vehicle then made a left onto West Kerr Drive. The three occupants exited the vehicle, which sustained minor damage, while it was still moving and fled.

Bynum said open containers of alcohol and paraphernalia for rolling joints was found in the vehicle.

Troopers and Halifax County Sheriff’s Office deputies canvassed the area and “kept the spot hot,” Bynum said.

Bynum believes the three may have been picked up by others.
