Williams scores 21 in Randolph Macon's win

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Junior Kelsey Wisner (York, Pa. / Central York) went 4-4 from beyond the arc in the first half, while sophomore Kelly Williams (Garysburg, N.C. / Halifax Academy) scored 21 points in a 67-40 Tuesday night win over Randolph in Lynchburg. Randolph-Macon (12-3, 5-2 ODAC) is on a three-game win streak, while Randolph (4-11, 1-6 ODAC) has fallen in its second game in a row.

Randolph-Macon took the early lead as senior Teal Reynolds (Sterling, Va. / Potomac Falls) opened the scoring and junior Jayla Wade (Newport News, Va. / Heritage) added a pair of field goals before Williams added a layup to jump out 9-0. With five minutes to go in the period, Randolph hit its first field goal of the game. The Randolph-Macon defense held the WildCats to that sole jumper in the first quarter as the Yellow Jackets took an 18-2 lead heading into the second period.

Randolph got the first points of the second quarter, but R-MC quickly got its lead back up to 16 with a jumper from Wade. The WildCats put together a 5-0 run leading up to the 7:30 mark; but Wisner hit a three-pointer to take the lead back up to 16 for R-MC. Randolph got the score within ten with 3:59 to go in the quarter, but Wisner hit another three along with a free throw, with Reynolds adding a bucket and freshman Becca Arrington (Amelia, Va. / Amelia Academy) sunk a three – her only points of the game -- to push R-MC to its largest lead thus far – 19 points-- with under :30 to play. R-MC would settle in with a 37-21 lead at the half.

Wisner finished the half with all of the points she'd earn in the game -- 15 – while adding an assist. Sophomore Charlotte Woods (Richmond, Va. / Trinity) led the team in rebounding with six.

Williams opened the third quarter scoring with a basket which extended R-MC's lead to 39-21. That began a 9-2 run over the first four minutes of the third quarter. A Randolph bucket with about five minutes to go in the period launched another 5-0 run for R-MC that gave the Yellow Jackets their largest lead of the night –26 points. Randolph ended the period on a 6-2 run, but R-MC still had the comfortable lead going into the final frame of play at 53-31.

Randolph and R-MC traded baskets for much of the first four minutes of action in the fourth quarter. Then, with 5:46 to go in the period, Williams hit a layup that began an 8-2 run that would close out the game and push Randolph-Macon ahead for the win 67-40.

In addition to her 21 points, Williams pulled in 16 rebounds and dished out two assists while also being credited with a block. Along with Wisner, Reynolds tallied 15 points as well. Wisner added six blocks and a pair of both assists and rebounds. Reynolds pulled in five rebounds, sent out four assists and stole the ball three times. Wade finished with 11 points and dished out three assists and took away three steals. Woods completed the game with two points as well as ten rebounds, a block, a steal and an assist.

Randolph-Macon scored 28 points off Randolph's 29 turnovers. The Yellow Jackets also scored 23 points off second chance opportunities.

The win marks Head Coach Carroll LaHaye's 599th win of her career. She has coached the Yellow Jackets since the 1982-83 season, spanning 36 seasons.

Randolph-Macon returns to Lynchburg to face Lynchburg College on Saturday. The game begins at 2:00 PM inside Turner Gymnasium.

Meth charges lodged in Pendleton raid

Evidence of a meth lab was discovered last week in Northampton County and three people have been arrested, according to a statement released by Sheriff Jack Smith today.

The execution of a search warrant led to the seizure by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation equipment and substances consistent with methamphetamine from the Pineridge Lane residence of Lawrence Grant in Pendleton, Smith said in the statement.

The residence has been a target of Northampton County law enforcement for several years, said Lieutenant Mike Sledge of the sheriff’s office.

Investigation of the residence goes back to at least 2014 when alleged evidence of meth production using a shake and bake soda bottle method was discovered.

The raid of the residence last Thursday was the result of follow-ups on drug complaints, Smith said.

The investigation was a combined effort of the Down East Drug Task Force, the SBI and sheriff’s office.

Speaking with the people at the residence, agents discovered inside what appeared to be a working meth lab.

Agents secured the residence and applied for a search warrant.

The SBI Clandestine Lab Team responded to remove the hazardous material from the residence.

{gallery}117meth{/gallery}

Arrested and charged were Grant, 46, Linda Tomlin 34, and Cody Beaumont, 24.

Sledge said Grant is Beaumont’s father and Tomlin is Beaumont’s girlfriend.

They face charges of felony manufacture methamphetamine, felony possession with intent to manufacture precursor and maintaining a dwelling for a controlled substance.

Precursor is items used in the manufacture of meth.

They were initially given $150,000 bonds. They had first appearances Tuesday, according to state court records, but no information on their next court dates was immediately available.

Smith commended the work of all agencies involved and the sheriffs of Hertford and Bertie counties. “This is a prime example when all three counties come together and remove dangerous citizens like this and keep all citizens safe.”

A Roanoke Rapids area woman has been charged with multiple firearm larceny counts following investigation of a December residential break-in in the Aurelian Springs area.

richardson

Chief Deputy Scott Hall of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said Christine Cherie Richardson, 47, was familiar with the victim in the case.

She faces 21 counts of larceny of a firearm and a count each of breaking and entering, felony larceny and injury to real property.

In addition to firearms, personal items such as jewelry were taken. A monetary value of the items stolen was not immediately available. Hall said the firearms have not been recovered.

The charges stem from a December 18 report in which deputies and detectives responded.

Richardson, who was arrested Tuesday, was placed in the Halifax County Detention Center under a $15,000 secured bond and has an initial court date of February 7.

Hall said additional arrests are possible.

Latest charge in AMVETS shooting shows gang ties

Latest charge in AMVETS shooting shows gang ties

A new charge filed against the organizer of a December party where a person was shot reflects gang activity.

Both Bloods and Crips attended the party at AMVETS Post 320, Investigator Gorton Williams said this morning.

On Tuesday Williams charged party organizer Emya Jahne Boothe, 18, with solicit gang activity, Chief Chuck Hasty said in a statement.

She had previously been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor in the case, which reflects children between the ages of 14 and 18 attended the party and drank alcohol and smoked marijuana.

Investigator Obert Wiltsie said this morning some of the children at the party either associated with gang members or were gang members.

(As police continue to investigate the shooting, Hasty said his annual report to the public will include speakers from the North Carolina Gang Association who will discuss issues the state faces with gang activity. That forum is scheduled for February 1 from 6 p.m.to 9 p.m. at Kirkwood Adams)

Whether the shooting which occurred outside the post on Eighth Street was related to beef between rival gang members is something which continues to be investigated, Williams said.

He described the event as a random party in which a combination of different gang members attended and were invited.

Investigators have stated previously there was an altercation which led to the shooting, in which the victim, described as an innocent bystander, was shot multiple times in the torso.

The victim continues to recover, Williams said.

Boothe was also served a criminal summons for two counts of assault, which were taken out on her by an individual, Hasty said. That assault reportedly occurred occurred Sunday.

She received a $10,000 bond and February 7 court date.

Since the initial investigation began, two additional people have been charged but investigators have yet to charge someone in the shooting.

Williams arrested and charged Donovan Demetree Edwards, 22, of Roanoke Rapids, with possession of firearm by felon and simple affray.

The possession of firearm by felon charge against Edwards reflects he attended the party while allegedly in possession of a weapon.

The simple affray charge was unrelated to the AMVETS party.

Last week police arrested a woman for reportedly taking the victim’s phone from him after he was shot.

Police said it was not clear why Doris Lavenia Bynum, 45, allegedly took the victim’s phone. The Halifax woman was apparently there to pick up her children.
