The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office reported the following, according to Chief Deputy Scott Hall:
On Friday Corporal S.E. Stansberry responded to the area of Hobgood on an assault call. Investigation led to charges being filed on William Walter Leggett Jr., 44, for cruelty to animals and simple assault.
Leggett was arrested Monday and posted $2,500 bond.
Hall said today the assault charge was the result of a dispute between Leggett and the victim.
The cruelty to animals charge reflects Leggett allegedly killed a dog. Hall could not immediately confirm whether the dog belonged to the assault victim or how the dog was killed.
Leggett has an October 17 court date.

The Enfield Police Department has charged a woman for reportedly concealing her mother’s death because she was curious about the stages of death.
The police department reported the crime on its Facebook page and sent out a press statement on the matter.
Chief Tyree Davis could not immediately be reached for comment this afternoon and did not immediately respond to a series of questions about the case sent via text message.
In the statement Davis said Donna Sue Hudgins, 69, of Enfield, was charged with felony concealment of death.
Investigation began when Hudgins went to a funeral home to make funeral arrangements, stating her mother passed that morning but she did not know where EMS had taken the body.
The funeral home tried and also could not locate the deceased.
The funeral home became concerned and contacted the Enfield Police Department.
Davis, Officer Jerry Shoemaker and Detective Teo Antunez Jr. responded to the mother’s residence and were able to make contact with Hudgins who also resides at the residence.
After speaking with the daughter, officers entered the residence to do a welfare check and discovered a badly decomposed body in the home.
Detective Willie Murphy Jr. and Antunez led the investigation and found the deceased was in the home for several months before the daughter notified family members of their mother’s passing.
Detectives interviewed Hudgins and learned she did not report the death because she was curious and wanted to see the stages of death.
After consulting with the Halifax County assistant district attorney, charges were filed against Hudgins for concealment of her 93-year-old mother’s death.
Hudgins was arrested and issued a $5,000 bond by Magistrate Christopher Kidd and is scheduled for court on November 7.
After consulting with the district attorney’s office the police department will not be making any other statements regarding this case, Davis said in the statement.
He referred questions to the district attorney’s office.
A representative for the district attorney’s office could not immediately be reached for comment this afternoon.
The Enfield Police Department is asking the community for assistance locating Travell Rashaun Scott of 107 East Alsop Street.
Chief Tyree Davis said in a post on the department’s Facebook page that early Saturday morning officers responded to 107 West Alsop Street for a breaking and entering in progress.
Detective T. Antunez gathered enough evidence to obtain warrants on Scott for attempted armed robbery, breaking and entering and assault by pointing a gun.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the police department at 252-445-5122 or Halifax County Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.

A store clerk is in surgery as of this report after being shot during an early morning armed robbery.
{gallery}92618rrpd{/gallery}
The clerk was shot once in an undisclosed part of the body and the injury is considered life-threatening, Roanoke Rapids police Chief Chuck Hasty said.
The robbery occurred at New Dixie Mart in the 100 block of Julian R. Allsbrook Highway around 12:45. The store is traditionally known as Presto.
Hasty said in a statement employees told officers the suspects entered the store armed with handguns and demanded money.
During the robbery one of the suspects jumped the counter while the other suspect ran to the back and went behind the counter.
The suspects demanded the clerks open the safe at which time the clerks advised they did not have access to the safe.
One of the suspects struck the employee in the head with a handgun. The suspects proceeded to take money and cigarettes.
When the suspects were exiting the store, one returned back to the counter and shot the employee who had initially been struck in the head with the weapon.
The suspects then fled on foot down Hamilton Street towards Clinton Street where they fled in an unknown vehicle and in an unknown direction of travel.
The employee was transported by Halifax County EMS to Halifax Regional Medical Center and then transported to a trauma center for treatment of the injuries.
Weldon suspects
{gallery}92018weldon{/gallery}
The suspects in the photos taken from the store’s security cameras bear a resemblance to suspects wanted in an armed robbery in Weldon last week.
Hasty said Roanoke Rapids investigators are looking into that possibility and plan to follow up with Weldon police.
Both suspects are described as black males — both standing about 5-feet, 5-inches tall.
One is wearing a gray sweatshirt and charcoal gray pants, white surgical mask around his face and blue rubber gloves. The other is wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and black pants, a red garment around his head and blue rubber gloves.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Captain Bobby Martin at 252-533-2820 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
These suspects are considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached. Contact law enforcement to let them know the location.
This weekend’s Halifax Harvest Days mark two milestones.
One is the official designation of the Allen Grove Rosenwald School receiving its National Register of Historic Places designation while the other is the dedication of the new recreational facilities on the grounds of the 4-H Rural Life Center off Highway 903 outside Halifax where the annual event is held.
Both ceremonies will be held Saturday with the Allen Grove recognition at 12:30 p.m. and the recreational facilities dedication at 1 p.m.
Rosenwald school
The Rosenwald school is one of 46 schools built in Halifax County.
Rosenwald Schools are named after Julius Rosenwald, president of Sears and Roebuck, who established a fund that eventually helped build more than 5,000 schools in the rural south for African-American children.
He worked with Booker T. Washington, founder and president of the Tuskegee Institute, to develop a plan for the schools.
Scott Power, regional supervisor of the Eastern Office of the State Historic Preservation Office, will speak about the National Register of Historic Places designation.
According to Claudia Brown, also with the State Historic Preservation Office, placement on the National Register, is “primarily an honor. It is the official roster of properties that are important to our past and are worthy of preservation.”
The Allen Grove school, built in 1921, was selected for consideration in part because “it is remarkably intact,” she added.
In addition, a tribute to Cary Pittman, builder of the Allen Grove School, and several other Rosenwald Schools in Halifax County and the nearby region will also be given. Several descendants of Pittman will be in attendance.
Any former student of the Allen Grove School or any other Rosenwald school will be recognized during the program.
Recreation facilities
Construction of the new recreational facilities was funded by the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, the North Carolina Parks & Recreation Trust Fund, Dominion Energy and the North Carolina Agricultural Water Resources Assistance Program.
These new additions feature an 18-hole disc golf course, new playground equipment, a multi-use court including basketball, volleyball, pickleball and tennis.
It includes a pond for fishing and STEM environmental education.
A new walking trail approximately 1-mile long interconnects these new components of the Rural Life Center.
These recreational facilities provide new opportunities for 4-H participants, as well as for Halifax County citizens throughout the year.

A Roanoke Rapids man has been charged in connection to crimes at two locations in the city.
The Roanoke Rapids Police Department on Monday had sought the public’s help in identifying a suspect.
Chief Chuck Hasty said in a statement at approximately 11:45 this morning investigators G. Williams and O. Wiltsie located Dale Maurice Williams, 31, in the 800 block of Cedar Street.
Williams had numerous outstanding warrants for breaking and entering.
Investigator J.K. Davis tied Dale Williams to two breaking and enterings at Perkinson’s around September 9 and September 17 and one at T.J. Davis Recreation Center on September 24.
Hasty said the connection was made by video surveillance and trace evidence left at the crime scenes.
Dale Williams was charged with three counts of breaking and entering; three counts of larceny after breaking and entering; three counts injury to property and breaking and entering a motor vehicle.
He received a $15,000 bond and December 5 court date.
Investigation continues and further charges may be filed.
Sergeant M. Moseley and Officer S. Blythe assisted.
A store clerk who was shot in an armed robbery this morning is listed in fair condition, Roanoke Rapids police Chief Chuck Hasty confirmed.
Hasty said investigators continue to seek leads in the crime which occurred around 12:45 this morning at New Dixie located on Julian R. Allsbrook Highway, a store traditionally known as Presto.
Hasty said investigators also continue to seek information on whether the crime is related to an armed robbery which occurred last week in Weldon.
Weldon police Chief Chris Davis said he could not confirm the crimes were related until completion of a thorough investigation.
Surveillance camera photos show striking similarities in how the two men are dressed in the Weldon and Roanoke Rapids crimes.
Hasty said in a statement released this morning employees told officers the suspects entered the store armed with handguns and demanded money.
During the robbery one of the suspects jumped the counter while the other suspect ran to the back and went behind the counter.
The suspects demanded the clerks open the safe at which time the clerks advised they did not have access to the safe.

We still have a good number of conference games left but we understood how big this particular game versus Granville Central was. I want to thank my players for giving everything they had tonight. We went up, then down, it was an absolute roller coaster. My guys didn't quit, didn't pout, and found a way to win. When they had to put it in the back of the net to force overtime (with 53 seconds left in regulation)and again in overtime to win, they had the composure to do so. It was fun to watch. Grey Draper's potential injury is a major blow for us, but we will hope for the best for him. My boys definitely deserve to be celebrating tonight. It is a special moment for this group that I am thankful to have experienced"

The Roanoke Rapids based 12U Lady Twisters travel softball team headed to Rocky Mount this past weekend finishing 2nd in the Girls Love Diamonds Tournament.
They would end up playing eight games this weekend, more than anyone else in the Tournament.
Mia Fleming took the mound for the first game of the day against Southern Chaos, striking out six and retiring 13 of 18 batters. The ladies struggled a bit at the plate only recording four hits, including key bunts by Logan Ross and Alexandria Richardson. Southern Chaos struck first in this game and two late game walks helped give the Lady Twisters the 3-2 win in the first pool game of the day.
Logan Ross faced off against the Lady Phantoms in the second pool game of the day. It was a rough outing for Logan as the Phantoms came out swinging. The Lady Twisters struggled as well at the plate, only getting eight hits with the highlight of the game for the Lady Twisters being Tyasia Stansbury’s 2 RBI triple that drove in Kaylee Collier and Makaila Ricks. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough as the Lady Twisters lost 11-5 in the second pool game of the day.
Again the Lady Twisters got a chance for revenge as the bracket seeding placed them opposite The Lady Phantoms in the first bracket game of the event. This time Kalissa Williams took to the rubber for the Lady Twisters and put on a show. Kalissa recorded eight strikeouts, retired 12 of 15 and only walked three en route to her first No Hitter. Key hits by the bottom of the lineup including a double by Tyasia Stansbury and a triple by Logan Ross helped spark the offense leading the Lady Twisters to a 6-1 win.
Kalissa took the mound against the Virginia Galaxy in the final game of the day. This time she recorded 7 strikeouts and retired 7 of 17 batters. However the offense didn’t show up in this one as the Lady Twisters only recorded two hits in the game, one of which was an inside the park Two run Home Run by Kamryn Dixon. The Lady Twisters would fall 5-2 and have to return early Sunday morning and fight their way out of the Loser’s Bracket.
Heading into Day 2 of the tournament the Lady Twisters faced off against the Triangle Twisters in an early morning game. Mia Fleming took the mound for the Lady Twisters and was phenomenal. She struck out 2 and retired 9 of 12 batters on her way to pitching her first No Hitter. The Lady Twisters took advantage of the young Triangle Twisters team and poured in the runs, scoring 10 runs in the first inning on their way to a 14-0 victory over the Triangle Twisters.
Game Two saw Kalissa Williams take the mounds once again against the Lady Phantoms, the 3rd meeting between the two teams this tournament. Kalissa struck out six and retired 11 of 15 batters. A late rally started by Akirah Grey and Alayna Davis pushed the Lady Twisters in front for good, as Kaylee Collier and Kamryn Dixon hit back to back triples scoring four runs and lifting the Lady Twisters to a 5-1 victory.
Kalissa Williams was on the mound for game three against the Virginia Galaxy. She struck out five and retired 12 of 21 batters. The Lady Twisters pieced together runs here and there in this back and forth game to see who advanced to the Championship Game. Mia Fleming and Kenzie Stallings had back to back doubles, driving in a run and pushing the Twisters out in front until the Galaxy scored three in the bottom half of the inning. The Galaxy added one more before the Twisters finally took off at the plate. Kalissa Williams singled, Mia Fleming drew a walk (her SIXTH walk for the tournament) and were driven in by singles from Jaina Davis and Kenzie Stallings. Tyasia Stansbury stepped to the plate and smashed an in the park home run, pushing the Twisters out in front for good, giving them a 6-5 win, sending them to the Championship Game.
In the Championship Game the Lady Twisters faced off against the Pitt County Heartbreakers in a close game. Kalissa Williams took the mound in this game and while she only recorded one strikeout she retired 8 of 16 batters and kept the Heartbreakers from running away with a victory. The Lady Twisters bats unfortunately were silent during this game and it wasn’t until Kenzie Stallings doubled to drive in Kalissa Williams late in the game that the Twisters were able to tie up the game. The Heartbreakers were able to score the winning run the next inning and defeated the Lady Twisters 2-1 in the Championship Game.
