No foul play suspected in Enfield death concealment case

No foul play is suspected in the case of an Enfield woman whose daughter was charged earlier this week with felony conceal or fail to report her death.

Public documents show 93-year-old Nellie Hudgins is believed to have died of natural causes, according to a medical examiner’s report.

The woman’s daughter, 69-year-old Donna Sue Hudgins, was charged by Enfield police on Monday.

The date of offense is listed as September 7 and it is believed Nellie Hudgins had been dead for two to three months before the offense date.

Enfield police Chief Tyree Davis this evening did not immediately return a phone call or respond to a text message seeking additional comment beyond a Facebook post and press statement he released Tuesday.

In that statement Davis said Donna Hudgins reportedly concealed her mother’s death because she was curious about the stages of death.

Investigation began when the daughter went to a funeral home to make arrangements, stating her mother passed that morning but she did not know where EMS had taken the body.

The funeral home tried and also could not locate the deceased.

The funeral home became concerned and contacted the Enfield Police Department.

Davis, Officer Jerry Shoemaker and Detective Teo Antunez Jr. responded to the mother’s residence and were able to make contact with the daughter who also resides there.

After speaking with the daughter, officers entered the residence to do a welfare check and discovered a badly decomposed body in the home.

Detective Willie Murphy Jr. and Antunez led the investigation and found the deceased was in the home for several months before the daughter notified family members of their mother’s passing.

Detectives interviewed the daughter and learned she did not report the death because she was curious and wanted to see the stages of death.

The Halifax County District Attorney’s Office declined comment this evening when asked whether Donna Hudgins had any past or current mental health issues.

Donna Hudgins has a November 7 court appearance scheduled in Halifax County.

RR police investigate second armed robbery of the week

Roanoke Rapids police are investigating the second armed robbery of the week.

Whether it is connected to one where a clerk was shot Wednesday is still being explored, Chief Chuck Hasty said.

{gallery}92818rrpd{/gallery}

The latest robbery occurred Thursday night around 11 at New Dixie Mart in the 1100 block of East Tenth Street, Hasty said in a statement.

When officers arrived employees told them a person entered the store armed with a handgun and demanded money as well as the purse of a customer who was in the business.

Both the clerk and customer complied with demands of the suspect, Hasty said.

The person fled on foot running towards the back of the store.

The suspect is described as standing about 4-feet, 6-inches and was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt and had something black covering the face.

This suspect is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached. If seen contact law enforcement to let them know the location.

Meanwhile Hasty said a store clerk who was shot during an armed robbery Wednesday at New Dixie on Julian R. Allsbrook Highway remains hospitalized and is fair condition.

Hasty said detectives can’t make connections on Thursday’s robbery being related to the one Wednesday because it is too early in the investigation.

He said investigators continue to examine whether the Wednesday robbery is related to one in Weldon last week.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Captain Bobby Martin at 252-533-2820 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.

Drug arrest

On Thursday at approximately 12:40 a.m., Officer C. Batchelor conducted a traffic stop for a violation in the 1000 block of Franklin Street.

The driver, Donavan Demetree Edwards, 23, of Roanoke Rapids, was reportedly in possession of narcotics.

Batchelor arrested and charged Edwards with possession of MDMA.

He received a $1,000 bond and October 4 court date.

Manning watches as Madison stocks the pantry.

For their Bronze Award project, the juniors of Girl Scout Troop 3023 built a community pantry box its members hope the community will help out in their efforts to keep it stocked.

The pantry, located just past the bridge at Chaloner Recreation Center, was stocked Thursday by members of the troop.

Madison Collier came up with the after seeing a similar project in which books were placed inside.

The girls decided to stock the pantry with food items, bottled water, hygiene items and even school supplies, Madison said.

“Some people don’t have enough money to get these things for themselves,” said troop member Akira Moody.

The pantry has the following message painted on one side of its glass doors — Take a blessing when you need one, leave a blessing when you can.

The girls did the bulk of the work, said Troop Leader Charlotte Bradley. They took measurements, picked out brackets and came up with the lettering.

They received construction help from Cleveland Moody and William Bradley. Lowe’s Home Improvement, Builders FirstSource and NC Glass were also partners in the project, Mrs. Bradley said.

{gallery}92818troop{/gallery}

“I hope it will go well,” said Assistant Parks and Recreation Director Kelly Manning. “We hope people will get what they need and we hope others will contribute and give back to the community.”

The scout project comes as the city plans new additions for the park, including a splash pad, new playground equipment, a paved walking trail, new shelters and the conversion of the tennis courts to multipurpose courts.

Manning said the city is hopeful the new additions will help increase the use of the park area as well as the traffic which comes through.

The Bronze Award is the highest award girl scouts in the fourth and fifth grade level can achieve, Mrs. Bradley said. “It is a community project that is sustainable and one that will go on and on.”

Mr. Moody was pleased with the efforts of the scouts. “They did a wonderful job.”

Meanwhile, the troop is soliciting help from the community to keep the pantry stocked. “We seek assistance to keep the box filled with supplies that our community members can benefit from the most,” a letter sent out by the troop says. “We would love it if different groups, businesses or individuals could pick a month to commit to keeping the pantry stocked.”

Anyone helping will be recognized in the troop’s Bronze Award project.

Examples of items needed for the box are:

Canned foods

Diapers

Baby wipes

Coupons

Bottled water

Toiletries

Cereal

School supplies

For more information, to donate or volunteer to stock the pantry contact Mrs. Bradley by email at iluduke@hotmail.com or by phone at 252-578-8326.

Although, it seems as if we’ve heard it all before, let’s note that the 2017 RRHS graduate and former Yellow Jackets football player, is still making Roanoke Valley proud.

Dre’ Terry, mathematics major at Chowan University is tackling another productive year both academically & athletically.

Approximately a year ago Terry made the headlines after he marked up 13 tackles 8 of which were solo, 1 sack, 1.5 tackles for losses and a pass break up that contributed to the Hawks first win of the season. Just like déjà vu Chowan Hawks caught their first win of the season this past Saturday. Dre’ led the Hawk’s defensively with 13 total tackles including 2.5 tackles for loss and a pass break up.

As if playing through a fractured wrist and minor injured ankle wasn’t enough he was also forced to miss a good portion of the second quarter due to a premature ejection however it did not stand in the way of him receiving his third CIAA weekly honor in his career this being his first in the linebacker category after grabbing two honors as a rookie last season.

In addition to everything else that was going on Terry was recognized during half time as a scholar athlete for meeting the criteria of maintaining a grade point average of 3.2 or higher.

When asked his thoughts thus far Terry stated, “We have played well verses good teams through this season. They were two D1 opponents and a top D2 offensive team. We have a good team and I feel like we could really win the conference."

Once again job well done by former Roanoke Rapids High School's Yellow Jacket Dre' Terry

A spirit of brotherhood, a spirit of community

Tyndall holds up a #teamhawkins shirt during her performance Friday night.

We have always understood the special bond firefighters have and we also understand the way our community responds in times of sickness.

Over the past week and really even longer we have been allowed a more intimate look into that brotherhood.

One of our valued news sources, a friend and business associate is a firefighter who just finished a fourth round of chemo treatments for a rare and aggressive form of cancer known as mantle cell lymphoma.

We met Battalion Chief Kevin Hawkins years ago. The other day we tried to pinpoint it and seem to agree it was when former Roanoke Rapids Herald photographer Todd Wetherington and myself spent the night at the fire department for a feature story.

It seems longer than that, we both agreed, and then there came a time in the formative years of rrspin.com when we received a message from Michelle Hawkins, Kevin’s wife, to call him.

This was during a time when we felt we had made the biggest mistake of our life — starting this website. We weren’t sure we were going to make it, wondered where the money to pay the bills was going to come from.

Kevin said he wanted to sell ads for the website and that gave us hope, given his involvement in fundraising for Ducks Unlimited. Things got better.

We mention this out of transparency. Typically we as journalists aren’t supposed to get too close to sources, we are supposed to be only observers but when a friendship and business relationship develops what are we supposed to do? Say, sorry, we can’t be friends? No, we accept the friendship.

That’s why Kevin’s diagnosis has been so hard because he is a friend. There have been tears shed, thoughts and prayers requested and many prayers offered since the news of his sickness.

Reading up and studying MCL we realize it’s serious and we know there is still a long road which will eventually require stem cell replacement and a month of isolation.

We also know scans are showing very little cancer now and for that we are thankful. Kevin’s positivity, outlook and faith helps bolster our positivity, outlook and faith that he can and will beat this.

Through our friend’s fight we have seen the brotherhood in action — the special T-shirts made by our friend and associate Randy Wrenn, news of generous donations and efforts to raise funds to cover expenses and within the last week a genuine outpouring from this community.

Carolina chips and Wells presentation

{gallery}carolinachips{/gallery}

Last week we went to Carolina Chips where the local company made a generous donation which was matched by the parent company.

Back at the fire department on Roanoke Avenue firefighter Bruce Wells presented Kevin a framed #teamhawkins shirt which has been prevalent in his fight — the lime green the color of lymphoma awareness.

The shirt was signed by members of the fire department and city staff encouraging the battalion chief to remain strong. Then Wells presented Kevin a check from the Lake Gaston Chamber of Commerce, where Wells’ wife, Christina, is the director.

The donations from Carolina Chips and the chamber show the spirit of community and even the Ladies of Lake are using proceeds from their Bunco games to benefit our friend.

Barbecue sandwich sale

IMG 0402

Wilkie agents Rhonda Nixon and Ford.

Then came Friday — a barbecue sandwich sale sold out in just over an hour’s time. Then there was a donation from Wilkie Real Estate where our mutual friend Henry Ford is an agent.

Friday was capped off by the Kasey Tyndall concert — see the second photo gallery at this link and Wrenn's photos at this link — at the Roanoke Rapids Theatre where members of the fire department and other friends accepted donations for Kevin. Tyndall promised during the show a portion of her merchandise sales would go to Kevin.

Her performance Friday was fiery and she didn’t shy away from encouraging those attending the show to donate.

We sincerely thank the new owners of the theater — Tom and Evon McLean — for allowing the evening’s free concert serve as a fundraiser for Kevin.

They had pledged early on to make the facility a place for community and have lived up to that promise.

We have seen this community spirit take on many faces in the past and to be living in it through our friendship with Kevin, we see the spirit more clearly and see how that brotherhood of firefighters continues to live on.

For Kevin, the outpouring has been both emotional and appreciated. “Words can’t describe the love and kindness I feel,” he said after the Carolina Chips donation and presentation by Wells at the fire department. “I appreciate the love and support from Carolina Chips. I just thank them from the bottom of my heart and soul. May God bless them.” — Editor

In all, Thomas Earl Weedon, 26, of Spotsylvania, Virginia, led law enforcement on a 59-mile chase where the top speed reached 120 miles per hour, said Sergeant M.P. Cape of the state Highway Patrol.

The chase in Virginia by the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office deputy who originally clocked him at 102 miles per hour ended when Weedon crossed the state line and the state Highway Patrol took over, Trooper T.J. Blount following him to the Nash County line.

Cape said Virginia authorities notified North Carolina troopers a Ford F-150 traveling at a high rate of speed on Interstate 95 was headed southbound around 9:50 p.m.

After the 33-mile chase in Virginia ended, Blount followed the truck on Interstate 95 for 26 more miles.

Troopers at the 152 mile marker had deployed Stop Sticks. Weedon pulled to the shoulder of the interstate at the 150 mile marker and surrendered.

Cape said the only explanation Weedon gave for the excessive speed was that he “just didn’t want to stop.”

During the chase and trying to perform a rolling roadblock, Cape’s patrol was nearly hit and a Nash County trooper’s car parked on the shoulder of the interstate was nearly hit.

As it ended, Cape said there were no damages and no one was hurt. “We were very fortunate.”

Blount charged Weedon with multiple driving offenses including speeding to elude arrest.

Weedon will also face driving offenses in Virginia.

Weedon was jailed on $10,000 secured bond in Halifax County.
